Please help me find the exact draught of my boat a fin keel Etap 28i, where do you measure to? I guess you measure from the bottom of the keel? Silly question you may think just as long as you have the answer.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Actual waterline (not neccessarily the painted line) to the keel base as long as this is deeper than the rudder, which it should be. Not as easy as it sounds as the boat needs to be level in it's cradle both fore/aft and sideways, try measuring both sides and averaging.

Long stick painted matt black ..... blackboard paint is excellent.

Now as tide is nearing full and literally near stopped rising .... approach a hard shingle very low angle shelved beach .... when keel touches, lower stick vertically till touches bottom .... blac paint gives water 'cut' mark on stick to measure with tape. Back off from shallows ....

Only takes a moment - making sure that boat is evenly balanced on list / heel.

Sounds daft way - but works !!

Other way is to measure from the dirty waterline mark to extreme bottom when the boat is lifted for winter wash-off and storage !! Make sure its vertical to the plane of the boat. Larger vessels have a fore, mid and aft draft .... for yachts it is normal to measure deepest.

G'day Richard.

Just in case you are very new to boating, measuring your total draft will give the same depth as that shown on your depth sounder; as it's not mounted at the water-line level. If you measure out of the water, then also note the distance between the bottom of the keel and the sounder, or if done on a shallow spot with a rising tide, note the figure on the sounder at the moment of contact.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, and hope this helps.

Avagoodweekend......

Draft = echo-sounder ?????

<measuring your total draft will give the same depth as that shown on your depth sounder;>

Sorry but my total draft is 1.1 m, but echo sounder shows 0.7m at that when just refloating .....

It may just be that the exercise is to deduce the offset for the echo-sounder ????

well, that depends if your depthsounder is set from waterline,mounting point or bottom of keel. Some you can set your self. Cant you ask etap,.Surely they must specify the draught of the boat?
