Yesterday ... I took a day off work, drove 240 round miles ..... and starred at a damp hull and keels all day in the vague hope a miricle would occur in the afternoon sun. Anyone got any advice / tips on how to recocnise a good antifouling day in December / January / February?

Not in advance. Let me know when you find out. There's oftena warm spell in February, sometimes just a couple of days, so if it happens, get your skates on.

2 winters ago I vainly waited for same, a relatively dry day to anti foul before launch. Finally with only one day to go before launch, and no possibility of delaying it, I squeegied off the hull with the car windscreen tool, hired a gas blow torch which was attached to one of the galley gas bottles. and with gas torch in one hand and paint roller in the other, managed to get 2 coats on the boat PDQ. The heat from the torch not only dried the boat, but also the first coat of paint, so managed to go right round twice. I did not use the torch between the first & second coats!!! Several guys on adjacent boats stood around watching in amazement, but as soon as I had finished with the torch, they were quick enough to borrow it for their own boat!
Best of luck whichever you get, dry weather or my patented gas torch method!

Go for the end of Feb, a good drying breeze and a forecast that rules out frost for a few days, then hope for the beat. I always leave it until April myself, but the boat does stay in for the winter.
