Heard that one lots of times but does it mean 1" in the hoist or the fly? As ensigns are generally proportioned at 2:1.

On the fly. On a 36 ft boat you end up with a 1 yard ensign. It's only a rule of thumb though, though it seems to be about right.

It a matter of taste I suppose. Some people have it, some don't.

..I always heard/believed that the rule of thumb is that the ensign should be just big enough to dip the water when at rest...

Different rules. Different thumbs. :)

I've not heard that one before but on the stern of a modern AWB that would end up with a pretty large piece of fabric.

Mine is a yard.

35ft boat.

The Pirate flags are the subject of some size envy....

Modesty and embarassment have thus far prevented publication. I know what you litigious Papps are like.:D

Look to the Forum of the Rising Sun. Or send me a begging PM with your email.

Looks very much like Turnaware in the Fal river.

Some who live around there call it Trelissick Cove - just opposite Turnaware Bar.
Whatever folks like to call it, it is certainly one of my all-time favourite anchorages. Here's a view from the other direction....

One of the several advantages is that one can row ashore, wander up the hill, and have a cream tea in the cafe of the NT's Trelissick House. Also, when I was last there, several fine kids from the estate would row around the boats in the anchorage each morning, selling buns, scones, breadrolls and other stuff they'd baked fresh that morning.

Then there was the daily entertainment when some p'lock or other would attempt to go the wrong side of the SHM on the end of Turnaware Bar, and get predictably stuck. :D
