So, my raggedy old ensign is looking a bit past it... and its not a proper one but a printed job... And now that I am on the East Coast I have noticed a propensity for larger, in fact MUCH larger ensigns than we would use in the SW....

So I am gonna order a nice stitched job for my xmas pressie... but I am wondering just how big I should go... whats a decent size and whats just being a plonker...

We are talking 9.5 meter AWB...

Heres the current set up....

I am thinking at least a 1 meter... but is this gonna be big enough?

That sounds pretty big... but I suppose that if I am confident with how I deploy it, no one will be unhappy!

A 1m Red Ensign ( sewn ) from the Ensign Flag Co Liverpool would be acceptable

That would have the added advantage of helping cover my ugly back end...

I hate oversized ensigns; they always look pretentious to me. I much prefer the old rule of thumb of 1" for each foot LOA.
Each to their own though.

Crikey Rigger Mortice, you wont like mine then... I've just got a 2yd one... Got to keep up with the Dutch somehow... :D

Well, you can't help being pretentious. Obviously you had a bump on the head during childhood. :):):)

As far as I can see the whole trend for oversize ensigns came over from the States where everything is OTT. Give me the calm, traditional, quiet approach of true Brits, rather than the loudmouth US style.

Heard that one lots of times but does it mean 1" in the hoist or the fly? As ensigns are generally proportioned at 2:1.
