House insurance

I have an empty house insured with Nationwide. They require the following;_

Any existing security devices must be used whilst the house is unoccupied.
Water and heating systems to be turned off but between 1 November and 31 March the systems must be drained unless a minimum temperature of 55 degress ismaintained.
Gas and oil supplies must be turned off.
Someone must enter and inspect the property at least once a fortnight.

No extra premium was charged or excess applied.

Unless it is regularly visited (say by a relative or trusted friend) at least once a month, ordinary house insurance is difficult. You can get commercial or landlords cover for renting without but this is much more expensive. Best way is to declare that someone visits regularly. You have to be sure that if you do that, then that person can attest to the fact that they have visited within the stipulated period if there is a claim. How the insurance company could ever "police" such an arrangement is unclear. I am of course not suggesting you falsify anything but it is only necessary to walk through the door and out again to truthfully state that you have "visited"... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
