Never saw your thread on Scuttlebutt.

I was in the Black Sea in 2007 and there was no escape from the heat. In fact people were dying from the heat in Romania.

However, the Black Sea was wonderful especially the Turkish coast (I went as far as Sinop). In virtually every harbour and anchorage along that coast people would invite us into their homes and lives. True anchorages are few and far between, but there are a lot of municipal harbours which we never got charged for. I loved it. We saw maybe 6 other sailing boats in the four months we spent there and 3 of those were from the Ukraine.

We also went to Bulgaria and Romania and they were pretty good too, although fresh produce was nowhere near as good as what we found in Turkey.

The sailing was hard work as any waves caused by bad weather in any part of the Black Sea bounce round and round. We frequently found awkward seas and no wind along the Turkish coast because of bad weather elsewhere in the Black Sea. On the Turkish side the fishing grounds only extend a few miles before it gets too deep, so any waves tend to be short and steep.

Having very hot easterlies for a few days in August is not unusual. It seems to have reverted to normal direction and mid 30's now for the start of Seker Bayram.

It has been a very hot and dry summer in the Med.

Last year at this time I was complaining about the cold Adriatic temperatures - below 24 degrees and down to 22 in some places. This year the daytime temperature has been above 30 degrees for the last couple of months and some of the marinas on the islands apparently have no water supply.

This year the sea temperature is 25 minimum and can be up to 27 degrees which is Caribbean-style! Beautiful for swimming of course.

Seems that the Med has been getting its own the summer plus the one that the UK didn't get!

Where have you been? We have had no such temps in Central and Southern Cyclades and no probs with water (Been East to West and West to East since May) In fact locals were complaining of the cold. It has been very windy this year but the sea temps have remained refreshing

Interesting - I assumed that as its been a hot dry summer in Southern Spain and the Adriatic, the stable high pressure systems had covered the entire Med this year but obviously not.

May in the Dodecanese was highly untypical. More than three weeks of southerly winds, which is the unstable direction. It was cold: we wore long trousers and sweaters several times, for the first time ever in Greece. We had heavy rain and some strong winds, 58 knots recorded in one blow. This photo was taken at 1000 one morning

As soon as May was over the meltemi began, early June. Almost constant north-westerlies ever since and extremely warm at times, well over 40C in July.
