No one posted anything about people drowning in the Channel off Calais, yesterday?

Seem like an appropriate topic.

Pretty hot.

Boating.

My opinion: I am very sad about it (the drowning)

Yes I was surprised that there was no thread on this

Any of us that have crossed the Channel knew this would only be a matter of time before this happened, but 27 dead, half of them women and children this is both shocking and very sad.

I just wanted a post where we could have a "two minutes" of silence. To remember.

Next time I go sailing, and I do so on a safe, well founded boat (thanks, Tigger), will reflect. Those waters out there are an immense source of pleasure for me, as for most of us on these pages. They are also killers.

as yet ( afik ) unconfirmed , it was run over by a freighter , do such vessels not post a lookout / watch . ( or was it at night , ) a bit concerning .

An appalling tragedy.

A SkyNews report I was listening to said that many leave in the early hours of the morning. And they are of course unlit, and whoever is steering is unlikely to have the faintest idea about avoiding collisions or making his presence known to ships.

The people traffickers have got their money before the boat embarks ,so they won't give a toss whether it reaches the other side or sinks.

I was visiting Kent yesterday and the rumour mill said a boat had been run down in the channel but later on the narrative changed to it had just deflated for unknown reason and all aboard had gone in the water.
Given the huge numbers that have crossed over the last couple of years there have been very few fatalities-----until yesterday.
It had to happen sooner or later and at this time of year it is too cold to survive long once in the water. I wonder if this will change anything

With that type of dingy it must be easy to finf the supplier . Also when the uk news people are fiming them setting off they should have a moral obligation to contact the authorities now they know people could be going to die.

If the so-called dinghies are being made in Europe I'd like, at the very least, to see the manufacturer's premises, and his home, being door-stepped by the media and demonstrators, and if possible see him prosecuted.

Would you want to do the same for the outboard motor manufacturer? Or are you saying big inflatables bad, small inflatables (such as we might use) good? If so, where would you draw the line between the two?

Looking on the news at the boats this evening they look like they are built for one crossing. The material on the tubes is very shiny and looks thin and the transom on one was made of unfinished low quality ply board - the one made with chips not layers like concrete shuttering.
There was speculation from a fisherman that they can’t deal with waves and that they flex and are easily punctured by the flooring.
