Help! My leech is badly hooked, I have an in mast reefing system and consequently there is no roach in the sail. I know that a new sail with vertical battens would be better but am loath to fork out just yet as in a few years may well need new mast (original now over 32 years old).

The hook is really bad and my sail repairer seems to be unable to reduce it by much. I try not to tighten the leech line as it just hooks the sail even more.

Net result is I lose pointing ability and drive in an already small sail.

Any useful (and cheap) suggestions.

Apart from fully slackening off the leach line (as you have obviously tried). Do you have an adjustable main track? If you have, try pulling it up to windward, sheet out the main slightly to set the boom to it's original position and the boom will lift slightly. This will put some more twist in the sail and free the leach. It may help.
