Honfleur to Rouen

There was a recent thread on this topic, which I'll try to find for you. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php?C...rue#Post1994242

Distance is 115km. Passage is quite feasible with a reliable motor, but a serious one, because of heavy commercial traffic (and resulting wash); paucity of places where stopping is feasible, let alone desirable; ban on night travel by pleasure craft; etc.. Strong tides and, at times, a tidal bore. The relevant Navicarte chart - No. 1, La Seine Aval - is pretty much a must, and contains details of passage times and tidal constraints, regs and radio channels, etc. CEVNI certificate not required, but knowledge of the CEVNI regs. highly desirable.

Passage upstream is faster (because tide follows you, you get 9 hours fair tide). If you can do 11 knots you can make the passage in one go either way any time of year. At about 5.5 knots you can't make it in one day in middle of winter because of short daylight hours, can make it regardless of tide times mid-summer, but spring and autumn tide times have to be favourable to make it in one.

Bon voyage!

Ita about 50nm...channel dredged and buoyed just outside Honfleur for several miles.... with several wrecks by saint jean and la passage....a bit iffy...floodlit on both sides

River about .17nm wide with lots of unlit islands.....keep an eye on the depth

All info from Cmap chart plotter

I think that from what both you and Carvel have posted, the marina at Le Havre looks more attractive - and then catch the train to Rouen and/or Paris for the day.

We can touch 7kts at a push, but I do not like going at full power for long - and not for 12 hours - and our fast cruising speed is usually 6kts.

No, I think we will stick to LH.

Anyway, it is a far enough from Falmouth to LH in daylight hops - Fal-Salcombe-Alderney/Cherbourg-LH. (Done enough all-nighters!!)

Many thanks for the excellent info.

Re: Honfleur to Rouen re stephenmartin

Lotsa erroneous info up there!

"Several wrecks. . . river about 17nm (?)wide. . . lots of unlit islands.....keep an eye on the depth...

No wrecks, no islands, no shallows, no mascaret, in fact no probs at 5-6 knots with sufficient daylight. If your French can't cope with Navicarte I recommend Featherstone's North France Cruising Companion.

All info from doing it just 2 weeks ago, including new but empty Porte de Plaisance in the Basin St Gervais (see Grehan's earlier post); search Google for more.

Re: Honfleur to Rouen re stephenmartin

Thanks for your assistance and information.

This site shows the construction of the marina at Rouen. It has only just been completed, so no wonder I could not see it with Google Earth.

Still thinking of the trip up the Seine - nothing ruled out yet - though, as we want to do the Channel Islands, we may just moor at LH and train it to Rouen and Paris.
