I have an old Honda generator model EM300E, the alternator has a fault which stalls the engine, does anybody out there have any info regarding the windings, regulation cct diagram etc. Any info gratfully received.
Try asking Honda themselves. We have found them very helpful with our old outboard. They even photocopied the instruction manual for us, something which did not come with the engine when we bought the boat.
I presume that you have ruled out any mechanical problems as the cause? I’ve got a more recent model (2500H) for which I have the circuit diagram. I had a problem with it last year, unrelated to your situation, and got some very useful advice over the phone (in my case, alternator output had failed after a load disturbance. Advice was that it had probably demagnetised and simple cure was to briefly apply 12 v dc to ac winding whilst alternator stationary, worth remembering generally as apparently a not uncommon problem).
Back to your problem, are you also sure that it’s not too much electrical load on it? Based on my unit model number, it suggests yours could be as low as 300 VA output, (unless model number/output relationship has changed). Does it stall the engine without any electrical load connected? If still a problem on no load, I suggest that it is unlikely to be a winding problem, but could be short circuit rectifier/regulator (depending on how configured).
If all else fails, worth trying a phone call to see if they can perhaps supply diagram: Try Hugh Lamgerton (Honda, in Luton) 01582 494111 or Peter Humphrey (Ernest Doe Ltd, Dartford) 01322 863285. Hope this helps.
If you need the good genny man who is also mobile I can recommend Graham Bowsher on 07768 893 739
He fixed my on board genny and even took a long time "tuning" it so that it powered our microwave.
I have no connection with Graham but he is an OK Guy!
