Honda BF2.3 Starting

I'm having trouble starting a year old Bf2.3 4 stroke outboard.

There is a spark and I'm going to change the fuel but I suspect that I've got oil in the cylinder when the outboard was accidentally stored on the wrong side /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I had a nice oily puddle to clean up from the bilges as well..

Anyone got any tips on clearing the oil from the cylinder and how to get it going? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
There have been a couple of threads on this problem recently which might help you. Re the spark, I wouldn't trust the fact that it's sparking OUTSIDE the cylinder as proof it's working once fitted.

It was exactly this problem that baffled a friend and I recently. Damned thing worked one day then not the next. Bright spark from the plug. Another friend with this engine said change the plug and we did.

Started first pull, and has done ever since! May not be your problem, but well worth the cost of a plug to check!
 
Take the plug out and turn the engine over a few times. If the plug is oily replace it with a new one. If it isn't oily though it's probably not the problem and more likely to be 'stale' petrol - they are not the easiest small outboard to start at the best of times.
Do yourself a favour and trade it in for the little Suzuki which is far better than the Honda.

Or a Johnson 2.5..........exactly the same engine, different paint scheme....in fact the Johnson 2.5 4-5 and 6hp models are all Suzukis...........No I don't want to start a black versus white thread, the way some of the grumpy bu99ers are on here today, Lord knows where it would lead! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I should have mentioned that I've already swapped the plug for the spare, I'm hoping it's stale fuel.

I'll try it in the morning and post what happens.

Age of fuel is no prob.
But fuel that is contaminated, yep.
You could have a blocked pilot jet.

had a similar problem on an identical Honda engine a few weeks ago. Turned out that the petrol in the carb bowl had gone stale/very thick. I removed the bowl (one 10mm bolt), emptied it and replaced it. The engine started first pull afterwards.
 
Yep, the jets are so fine, they clog easily.
Ensure you run the carb out of fuel every time its switched off, and you will have no recurrence.
 
I had a problem starting my early Honda which was cured when I discovered the choke control wasn't working correctly. Now it starts first pull.
 
I agree with Fullcircle. I have the same engine and it often "paused for thought" when running.

I found that the carb and jet were full of goo. It has run perfectly after cleaning them.

I now turn off the fuel tap before I get to the boat for the final time, but it is amazing how often I run out of fuel just before I reach the boat /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
The problem was very simple, the carburetor was full of what looked suspiciously like engine oil! This must have got in when it was stored incorrectly.

It started third pull once petrol started coming out of the drain screw (Pg 60 of the manual).
