Holding tank

A quick peek through the Reeds Almanac indicates that pump out facilities are nowhere to be found near the Crouch in Essex where I am based. The 25ft boat I am in the process of buying has a holding tank, am I going to have to remove it, or can these things generally be pumped out at sea, or be diverted away from the holding tank when not in the marina/inland?

Thanks...

All holding tanks on sea boats should be plumbed for discharging at sea. You need to get it fixed with pipe and pump.

Yes, they're generally pumped out at sea. And yes, you can divert such that discharge is direct to sea. There seem to be no pumpout facilities anywhere at all in UK - anyone know otherwise?

Err. Its better if discharge is underwater, as over the side can be a bit messy!

My boat has a non DIY pump out system and there seems to only be one pump out station within an hour + of Hythe so will be getting a pump over board system fitted and would reccommend that you should consider this as it has proved to be a pain not having one.

Bitter experiences are from the old forum days and nothing to do with pump out system. Just not using it, thats all!!

There are two pump out stations in loch lomond!! But that might not help you guys down on the south coast!!!!!!

You are not allowed to pump anything into the loch!!

Cheers...

When you are choosing the pump, select a proper one. I had a pump made by Johnson which worked well (until it broke down after running dry for too long :). I had it replaced by a Korean pump (can't remember the make), which is useless. It pumps poorly, if at all. It gets blocked very easily. It's also too quiet -> you can't tell by the sound of the pump when the tank is empty.

Also, be sure to use non-bleached toilet paper.

Best regards,
T
