Hemple paints are used a lot for commercial shipping - hence larger can sizes.
Their website www.hemple.com gives product data sheets. Check specific antifouling type.
Much of their antifouling is designed for ships which spend most of their time underway at >10knots and may not suit a yacht which spends most of its time at rest in coastal waters.

I use Hempel Olympic 86900 which was recommended to me by a big charter company operating locally. It is in fact a product intended for professional use on slow speed merchant vessels, but I have found that it gives very good results on a yacht. It is a high cuprous oxide content antifouling, a fact proved by the weight of a 5 litre can, which is noticeably heavier than most other brands.

We use it.

Not supposed to be used for yachts - commercial vessels & warships only (says so on the tin).
More toxic than yottie antifoul (which is why I use it) - cheaper too.

Last application lasted 2 years (applied in between tides & in the rain) - application before that (dry) lasted nearly 4 years (pressure wash after year 3).

It's good if you sail on a regular basis or keep your boat in a river with some current running.
Kept is 'still' marina waters it tends to be less effective.

Beware Fake Hempel Anti-Fouling paint Greece

Be careful in Greece with paint that is alleged to be Hempel brand. We were sold red "Hempel" material by a Greek boatyard. This paint simply had no anti-fouling properties whatsoever.

I raised the issue with Hempel and while their UK Sales Manager was sympathetic and helpful, the Greek distributor for Hempel was less than helpful, very slow to reply, then simply pointing out that there was fake material in circulation in Greece.

At no time was there any request for material for analysis to establish if this was, or was not "GENUINE" Hempel paint.

Please make your own decision with this brand if you are in Greece and carefully check containers to confirm batch and serial numbers wherever possible to avoid gross disappointment and a waste of costly slipping fees that may deliver poorer anti-fouling qualities than you may expect, possibly no anti-fouling quality at all!

Caveat Emptor

I'm using the Hempel Olympic semi hard. Its an ablative scrub able antifouling designed for racing yachts. Its sold in two versions in Australia, both ablative but I chose the harder version.
Its only been available for a couple of years and as I understand it Blakes was taken over by Hempel. It is about equivalent to Altex No5. Seems to be holding up ok.
Its stocked by all the marine shops on online shops and of course eBay. Comes in 5 litre tins instead of the usual 4 litres.
