Hi

I have been sailing for most of my life but still struggle with the terminology and to make matters worse I am now trying to restore an old fireball dinghy to get me on the water when not able to go out on my normal boat, not to race it though so not worried about making it class legal

i have more questions about this than i can even begin to list but my immediate problem is that i need to buy something for the boat but cannot find them on the web as i do not know the correct term for them

in the boat there are bouyancy compartments that have holes around 6 inches wide to allow access, I know normally there is a plastic removable cover for the bouyancy compartments which you can open if required - what is the technical name for these covers and does anyone know where you can buy them?

thanks

tom

(ps if anyone has a fireball and is willing to answer some other questions I would be really grateful)

Is this what you are looking for

Hatch Covers is what you want to ask for - note there are several different sizes and the important thing is to put a new rubber seal o ring on them (or smear them with vaseline) as they will leak.

I've not got a Fireball, but have raced a wide variety of dinghies at international level for over 10 years so will probably be able to help with any questions you have - send me a PM if you want.

I meant any more questions in general - I am happy to pass my mobile number to discuss these things, but clearly not on a public forum - sorry if my wording was ambiguous.

Equally I am happy to answer questions on here, but thought if there were a lot of questions a call may be easier.

thanks for the help - they are the things I need

I will get them ordered and undoubtedly come back with another daft question - am hoping to get it on the water this summer but it may take that bit longer but will be fun doing it hopefully

thanks for all the help

I came across a fireball many years ago with a latin name, the owner was a doctor and he informed me that it was a medical term for inflamed testicles.

Funny I know we speak a different language (why can't the Brits learn to speak English?) but we call them "inspection ports". Differentiating from hatches which are much bigger. olewill

[/ QUOTE ]No problem - I thought that there were answers that were going to be of interest that were being shared privately. My brother and I raced a Fireball once and I was interested to hear the discussion. PM's are just the thing for swapping telephone numbers and e-mail addresses though.

Nothing more I can add - it is a buoyancy hatch cover he's after - nothing special ...

I did have a white fireball - until I was T-Boned by a red Albacore - then I painted it red cos I assumed the albacore helm couldn't see the white boat ....
