Volvo 2003 Turbo 43 HP. Just changed fresh water pump and had to drain and refill fresh water system. now engine overheats. I think I may have an airlock. Did not seem to replace as much liquid as drained out. I have undone hoses in high and low places and water comes out. If it is an airlock I do not know how to get rid of it. The engine does have a hot water tank and heat exchanger. Sea water system works well. It also passes through an oil cooler. I have also changed the thermostat. I am cruising in South Biscay and am desperate for help. Thank you. Ian

On the 2003T there is a small brass bleed setscrew on the front of the square turbo housing which is bolted to the exhast outlet in cylinder head. If you follow the cooling pipe back from the thermostat housing, the bleed setscrew is just above where the pipe goes into the turbo housing. Hope this helps,

Thanks very much. I have tried this, although only when engine cold. If you have any other ideas I would be very grateful. Ian

I have just also reconditioned my freshwater pump on my 2003T without any problems. Just a thought - have you put the thermostat in the right way up?? Also when the engine has reached working temp and then overheats, is the water in your hot water tank also hot?? I also note you have a calorifier - is the header tank of the fresh water system above the level of the heating coil in the hot water tank? I had to reposition mine. The only other thing it could be is a blockage somewhere in your cooling system. Apart from that I'm sorry I can't really think what else it might be.
Good luck and kind regards,
Lawrence
