well what a disaster of a weekend, left hamble filled up with fuel ,two friends on board who wanted try wakeboarding of my Targa 31 .on circling around to pick on up after a wipe out i noticed a sooty black deposit on the water coming presumably from my exhaust , looked in engine room to find small oil leak coming from what looks like the oil cooler, not a seal or gasket leak but a hole which looks like it was caused by corrosion, anyway put an extra pint in, decide to put a cup under it and head for home.i dont think this problem is related to the sooty deposits as the oil is dripping into the oil tray and has no way of exiting the boat, also it appears from both engines not just one. 1 1/2 hours later the bilge pump light comes on , we stop the boat and find the bilge full of oil ,bilge pump clogged and after letting the oil settle dip the stick to find nothing in there.oil pressure remained normal at all times ,and no warning lights came on.Question is whats causing the sooty deposits, and is it likely ive caused any damage to engine, where can i get a decent priced cooler, a new one is £1500 are there any secondhand ones about. is this something i could fit myself (no real mechanical experience) or should i leave it to thr pro`s ?.engines ad41b`s diesel.

I think the two problems may be related. The black smoke signifies something is amiss with your engine, did you notice a loss of power aswell? You may well have starved the engine of oil, but I don't see why it should be both engines smoking, unless you have some bad fuel. The leak in the heatexchanger/oilcooler, shouldn't cause the black smoke. It also shouldn't have corroded through, especially on the oil side. It may well be a far better option to get an expert in here, before you do some irreversable damage. IMHO

there was no black smoke just a sooty deposit on the water surface.i did feel that the engines didnt pull as well as they used too which could mean i suppose that i picked up some sub standard fuel i did take on 3/4 tank.

These engines hold over 2 gallons of oil, you have probably in excess of a gallon left when oil is just off end of dipstick. Hence oil pressure normal. Try Coastal rides in Kent, but he's not back till 8th Aug.

A mechanically knowledgable friend of mine uses Ebbtide Marine Engineering just outside the gates of Shamrock Quay at Southampton. Speaks highly of them.

Not sure, but they may be VP agents too.

I had a similar experience on a delivery trip a couple of months ago.
We'd gone Faversham to Ramsgate on the Sat. and stayed overnight at Ramsgate. In the morning, I was sorting out the Nav. and suggested to the owner that cjecking Oils and waters would be a good idea. On checking the starboard engine they found no oil. They filled with nearly 5 litres of oil, ran engine and all was OK.
1 mile out of Ramsgate the engine tightened and oil fumes were everywhere. So shut down engine and proceeded to Dover on 1. At Dover investigation showed a huge amount of oil in the bilge. Dover Yacht co. diagnosed and found a thubnail patch of corrosion on the Oil filter which had leaked the oil.
They originally thought it was oil cooler which leak and dump the oil into the seawater outlet. The engine turned out to be seized and the boat was subsequently sold as is.
Engines were V%&o 140A petrols and 5litres is very nearly a sumpfull. I can't see how this could happen to both engines though.

I can reccomend Yachting sports at Hamble point, the mechanic there Dave is a friend of mine and very experienced with V****s, I used to work with him looking after a charter fleet. Also, I can lend a hand, in Hamble, have got comprehensive toolkit too if ya need to borrow anything.

I am gonna spend it on wine, women and song, and blow the rest.........

Re:Bl****** h***

For crying out loud how long must that oil filter have been in situ for it to have rusted through.

And the weather for the weekend is...............

What, you mean you have to change them!!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Ian I might have a secondhand cooler will have a lot tom am, if the cooler is leaking oil into the water ways then the sump would empty in a short time, also pressure would be very low, the oil would exit through the exhaust after going through all the sea water ways, ie the intercooler and heat exchanger, also the soot may be the oil burning on the way out, sounds like it may be related to the job done by motortech as they had the engines out not long ago if I remember correctly, as for Ebbtide from dealing with a client on the Hamble he is at war with them at the moment as they did a gearbox swap for him, its done 12 hours and its knackered again, and they are being relly slow about sorting it.
I would suggest getting an expert locally to check out the cooler although it only held on with 4 13mm headed bolts, and needs the inlet and outlet pipes disconnecting, then take it to be pressure tested, Im off to the Costa on thursday so I am not going to be in the area for sometime, sorry, and im snowed under with jobs up here as well, also if you have been wakeboarding you will be putting more load on the engines so the sooty deposits may be from that, if al else fails ring me for a price on the cooler, I have just bought 2 for the Targa job I told you about a few months back, and I did not pay anywhere near that price.

Re:Bl****** h***

Interesting question, when I had a close look the filters looked clean and newish, the owner reckons they were serviced about 6-9 months previously and the boat hadn't been anywhere. Part of the problem is that an oil pressure gauge will read normally right to the last teaspoon of oil, then drop to zero. By that time it's bang!
Certainly we didn't have any clanking or banging, the only symptom was that although the throttles were wide open this engines revs salowly reduced.

Most of its a mystery and I'd have liked to be more closely involved, but as I said the boat has now been sold.
