I wonder if MDF might do as an alternative, sources like B&Q have plenty in varying sizes and thicknesses and it would probably be good as a non-structural material ,and would glue also; it would bend where necessay for the curvature being covered. cheaper too than having to cut large 8x4 sheets.of expensive ply.

Have you seen what happens to damp/wet MDF? Might be ok if it was possible to it sealed.
 
Lidl currently have those telescopic rods that are used to support ceiling plasterboard whilst being erected. Might be useful to support curved battens whilst being glued/glassed to the ceiling? (£12.99 each)
