Allegedly! An old wooden boat, been fettled by Tom from Alcadeisa Marina. The boat tied alongside is a Moody 38. The “mast “ on the wooden boat is an antenna mast! He originally drilled scaffold pole sized holes in the Moody, allegedly with the intention of buying another and joining them together to make a Cat!
He is on his way anyway! Culatra? E7B43A64-7BC6-441B-AC90-A82B838A19B5.jpeg

Is he the one with the picture of Marilyn Monroe on the deckhouse?
He's got guts to sail away with that kind of floating device!!!
PS. I always wondered what the mastless/pierced boat was for.

Dunno about MM, we left last year, no pic then, a talented mechanic but a bit eccentric!

I was told when I first went there a few years ago that it was full of “ageing, dope smoking, pony tailed German hippies living on old Wharrams”

The police cleared the pool at gunpoint a couple of years ago. One German was locked up for firing a flare and several, including a couple of Brits, were fined. An 80+ woman living alone on a catamaran (now in Bruce's) was fined IIRC €1.5k.

What was she fined for❓

Don't know the specific charges but it was quite a drawn out legal process. Many had been in the pool for years and IIRC they were trying to establish something like squatters rights and had refused to move. Hers was one of a few boats which left eventually under her own power. This took place at roughly the same time they were demolishing illegal dwellings on the islands.

There were also illegal boats - unregistered, uninsured etc. and in Portuguese waters for several years.

Does a yacht in Portuguese Waters have to be registered and require insurance? Long stay visitors have to register but boats? For Brit boats think the SSR will suffice?

Without insurance, they won't be permitted to enter a marina? but on anchor and lagoon in Culatra is not a marina?

Not that I advocate that boats, everywhere in Portugal, should not require insurance (n) - quite the opposite!

Not trying to be pickie - just, establish the requirements for the benefit of would be new visitors.

Just had a word with the woman I mentioned. The pool was being cleared as part of the coastal clearing of illegal houses, boats and wrecks. Initially there was a €500 fine payable to a charity, which is strange but then things moved on. Evidently many left the pool when it was being fenced off but then went back when the fence wasn't completed. The later higher fines were basically for civil disobedience and there were threats of boats being confiscated and sold if fines not paid.

Portuguese have some pretty draconian laws and hefty fines so beware. Typical instance, if caught scuba diving in Ria Formosa without a license from police is up to €5k fine plus another €1k for not displaying dive flag which, for obvious reasons, we don't do! Snorkeling also requires license.
