Have I missed something?

I am curious at the cloak and dagger secrecy that shrouds some recent postings.

What is all this reference to Marian's bb site. Why on earth is it shrouded in secrecy in postings and nobody is allowed, or so it seems, to mention it.

Will someone please tell me where it is as I would like to have a look.

VERY DODGY!!!!

Whilst on the BYM forum you do not find posts with references to the web address of SB being removed or "edited" not quite so certain about the reciprocal policy! At great risk of being excommunicated from SB, if you go to www.boatsyachtsmarinas.com and then follow the link to the forum, you will find what has caused the consternation amongst a few of the regulars here! You will be made welcome!

The secrecy is that the administrators of this BB regard it as a rival site and so censor all postings that include the address. If you look in the thread entitled "Happy 1st Birthday" you will find a couple of postings with the very telling by-line "Edited by Kim ...." showing where he has deleted the address. In more extreme cases some postings have been deleted all together.

Kim is quite within his rights to do so but I personally think it is a bit pointless - BYM does not really threaten these sites in any way and most of the regulars on BYM also contribute to the IPC forums (although they often use different names). Given that Kim so clearly dislikes it, I will refrain from posting the address here.

As to whether you've missed something - that depends on your point of view. The flavour of BYM is very different to the current SB / R2R - much more like SB was in the 'good old days' and rather similar to what the MBM forum looked like last time I popped in (a few months ago).

To clarify the conspiracy theory

The only thing I edited out recently was one extremely long eulogy to the boatsyachtsmarinas bulletin board, plus a repeat mention of the address. A repeat mention of the address in this thread has also just gone before I started writing this.

If any other commercial website (and yes, if you look at Marian's site there are references to selling ads and so on) was to be plugged time and time again this way it would get pulled so I'm just applying the same rules.

I've known Marian Martin for some time now, since the days she wrote for me at Motor Boats Monthly. There's no personal hang-up on either side as far as I am aware - neither is there any great secrecy.

Re: curiouser and curiouser

oho, so in fact MM wrote everything for you, and all those things written by "you" actually write by MM! I can see how she got annoyed, yes indeedy.

Anyway there's no chance of ditching the conspiracy theory now cos it's folklore, so that's that.

I don\'t follow that

If it was a commercial posting, why only delete one 'advert' and not the other? Also, why delete it when mentioned by posters who are not connected to BYM (except for posting there)?

I own an Autohelm: does that mean that I can't mention the URL of raymarine's website if it's relevant to a posting? OK, that's your prerogative, but the rather petty backbiting and 'cloak and dagger' bit just draws attention to the other site, and leaves a rather unpleasant taste in the mouth amongst posters. What's the point in trying to hide the fact that there are competitors? BYM isn't the only competitor for that matter.

A similar comment applies to people to criticise whichever forum they don't belong to. What's the point? Do yacht clubs also have such childish attitudes? If so, I'm glad I'm not a member of one. The vast majority of people on both forums seem to be pleasant, interesting and open people, so why the backbiting?

Let\'s be clear about this

There's nothing to stop you quoting Raymarine's URL if it is helpful to the post (search on that URL here and you'll find plenty of references to it) and the same applies to BYM...as I pointed out elsewhere all we did was a bit of weeding to take out the repetitive entries plugging the site.

I guess if we were being that draconian we would have removed the many messages concerning BYM's disappearance on 8 May and its reappearance on 13 May.

Agree with your live and let live sentiments - we simply seek to try and establish the fine line between useful info and a publicity campaign. Its the kind of policy that is usually requested by Scuttlebutt visitors. Nothing cloak and dagger in that at all. Most other BBs have similar rules - we respect them and only ask for the same treatment in return.
