Hardwood varnishing ?

No UV exposure, doesnt need painting (it will be tucked away in a locker as a "bit of support"). Do I need to varnish it or should I just leave it alone as people do with teak slats in cockpits for example (which are exposed to UV) ..... ?

oil it with some boiled linseed oil

I think it really comes down to how much you enjoy varnishing. I would just leave it and have never had an issue. I'm sure some of the varnishing fetishists will be along with 12 step annual routines shortly to tell you the "proper" way to protect the wood

It’s quite normal to leave wood untreated if it’s not seen,especially hardwood maybe soft wood could have a splash of anti woodworm

I would apply anti-fungal stain and that would be all.
