Had a busy and enjoyable season. Changed boats and sailed the new one back from Cornwall to new base at Wisbech. Lots of trips to Wells in the summer - lovely!

However, now the hard work's come around I find I've got a bit less time on my hands than expected (new job - shouldn't complain in current state of the country). So I would be very pleased for any recommendations for good contractors/tradesmen who would work in Wisbech. Apart from the usual maintenance, got two steel rudders (it's a cat, you see!) that need attention plus fridge & heating to fix, plus probably new upholstery.

It would be good to build up some contacts in this area, which as I say is new to me. Yes, I will ask at the club and Paul who operates the boat lift is going to ask around too, but I thought worth asking the massed wisdom of this forum for who to choose...and perhaps avoid (by PM if necc)

Thanks, Andy

I live just outside Wisbech and have kept a couple of boats there. Not exactly an area rife with boat specialists. No disrespect to Paul, but be wary of anyone who he recommends who has worked on their stuff, they tend to use the most expensive people in the area, as the port like things done, on "money no object basis" lol.

What's the problem with the rudders ? If they are steel there are a few engineering places around.

There is a place nearby, at Kings Lynn that do car upholstery, amongst other things. They've done a few bits and pieces for me over the years, always been happy with their work and prices. Brockwells, 01553 764 582

There is also a general marine engineer that operates from Drake Towage's yard. Don't have any contact details for him but his name is Alan, i'm sure if you call Drake Towage on 01945 589 539 they'll steer you his way.

Have a word with one of the members of the Yacht club, they should be able to give you some good advice, but as the moorings are a recent addition there is a lack of local services for pleasure boats.

I know a good engineering works in Peterborough (owner has a boat), bit out of your way but depends on where you live.

There are two boatyards in Stanground (Peterborough boating centre, Jacksons yard) and one in March (Fox's boats). there are also boat yards in Ely, StIves and Stneots.

Thanks Paul and Rick!

The skegs and rudders need to be ground down to steel and re-epoxied (checked survey - memory's playing tricks on me, thought it was more than that for 'mid-term' jobs, but base fittings were rebuilt in Cornwall already, thankfully)

Lots of little things to do to get her how we want it - 17 years old and not received that much attention in recent years. However, surveyor happy enough with the essentials.

Hope to see you on the water next year.
