As I contemplate a new mooring chain with a decent amount of warp behind it I'm left wondering how one manages the change between chain and warp with a gipsy and seperate drum type windlass (eg Lofrans Tigre)

How do you manage the change-over? Or do you just scrag the warp using the gipsy to recover it and ignore the drum?

There shouldn't be that much tension where you cannot momentarily move the warp / chain from drum to sprockets or back. A nudge of the engine, which should be on anyway, works wonders.

Unless the anchor's off the bottom at the join it's a non-issue.
Quite often pull the string in by hand, just use the windlass for the chain.

If you do have the anchor aweigh, then you might be looking at securing with a chain hook and hauling in a bit more.
Only needed to do that playing at Race Committee Boat where no sensible person would anchor!
