Thanks again to everyone - very useful information. Armed with this, I'm going to pop down to a chandlers at the weekend to have a look at the Icom, Garmin and Simrad "in the flesh" so to speak.

Cheers

as a few others have said, buy the features, not the cost. I use a HH on a dayboat, and I confess that sometimes even though I think I ve charged it at home, turns out a little salt crystals on the connector means it isnt charged after all. That isnt going to make your day as you abandon ship ! Bigger buttons for cold fingers. Some you can add in normal batteries which coud be useful as a back-up power supply. Use it regularly, so you know its features, and you KNOW its charged. And then you wont think of the cost as a -hopefully-unused piece of safety equipment. I wouldnt support keeping it in the bottom of your emergency bag. You just know what will happen when you try to power up....

Re: I like knobs!

The garmin can be difficult to adjust e.g. Squelch and Volume - which is a minor irritation.

Other than that it is a winner - fully waterproof and takes dry cell batteries if required. To me it is the ideal emergency HH (which is why I bought it of course).
