Halfpenny Pier

Beware mooring on the outside of the pontoon. In the wrong weather or if a large ships goes by it is easy to rip a cleat out, Do not tie off too tight, leave plenty of slack in your lines and pull your boat in each time you disembark or embark.

We decided to overnight there for the first time last autumn. Wind was around force 4 but from the SE - so I thought it would be perfectly sheltered. Worst night aboard ever, hardly a wink of sleep, even after several pints in the Alma.
All cleats intact come daylight - could not say the same for my nerves. Sailed up to Wrabness and anchored for some sleep.

We were stuck on inside last year when we could not get into shotly due to them have lock issues, had to spend two nights on, go so bad w3 had to get off at 4am, they closed the pontoon, we ashore watching the web cam with both boats being thrown about, each had two cleats rip out, 14mm mooring lines snapped, it was horrible to watch, winds ove4 40 knots at time from NW, harbour master did his best during a late afternoon lull to 25knts, and forecast for more + 35knts, just getting back on board was a challenge, got off and shot up river
