Just another breakwater would do!! Leave the pontoons for somewhere else.

Actually another vote for alderney. Love the place

+1
If the marina happens all the charm will be lost, as well as the 'excitement' of the swell -will it, wont it ... as you navigate towards the island

Yup. We first came over in a light Ne wind. A little swell but the boat sat head into it so comfortable. Overnight the wind swung to westerly and the swell came and defracted around the end of the breakwater giving a northly swell into the moorings. We say head to wind and rolled for the rest of the night.
Tried one more night before bailing out.

I'm sure it's a lovely place. The little we saw was nice but it was wet so didn't get to see much.

Don't build a marina. Please. As nice as it may be it will spoil it for visitors

So?

My own view as a true local is that we shouldn't pander to yacht type people. Guernsey is Guernsey, get over it. And as to complaining about people on benches around the marina, well, do you think this is Iran? Last time I looked people were allowed to go and sit on a public seat in a public place?

You'll still come as the lure of tax free cheap fuel is too big to ignore.

I am in SPP at this moment and can assure you all that the older members of staff are concerned about this thread...one of them drew my attention to it this morning. They have had to take on several young members of staff in recent times ...but I have found everyone to be helpful and accommodating...mind you it is February...and I have a whole inside pontoon to myself..that said, the staff here do have to cover all 3 marinas here.Anyway I was asked to assure you all that the issues raised here are being addressed....and that positive steps towards an improved service are being made for this season......I am solely here on transit to Portsmouth and have no personal gain to be made from supporting the staff here..BUT..I HAVE FOUND THEM TO BE POLITE AND HELPFUL...INCLUDING THE NEWER YOUNGER ONES...they do handle over 150 boat movements some days in the summer.!!!
AND...it is a nice island..as are all of the Channel Isles. It deserves a chance to get it's act together...which I think it will.........................................

My view as a visiting yachtsman is that if others in Gurnsey share your attitude I'll be keeping my money on this side of the channel, or taking it to France.

When will you learn that we don't need you? We choose where we sail, and for us it's a holiday which should be fun and relaxing, it's why we go sailing after all.

As much as we love La Nautique, there are so many other restaurants in the world we could visit instead, and very happy to pay more money to sail somewhere for good service and to be appreciated.

As for tax free fuel? I have a sailing boat, and my tank is all of 77 litres.....I won't be saving that much.....and which way was Jersey again?

I really do hope for the sake of St Peter Port you're the minority...of one

Breaking News

Just read,this morning,,,

Jersey's marinas have again been highly rated by the Yacht Harbours Association.

The marinas have retained their five gold anchor status - the highest rating possible.

The voluntary scheme began 23 years ago to give boat-owners an idea of the quality and level of facilities they could expect when visiting marinas.

The review says Jersey's three main marinas give an excellent first impression and are clean and tidy with strong attention to customer care.

The Gold Anchor Award Scheme ratings vary from one to five gold anchors and involves an independent assessment, a Mystery Shopper visit and a berth holders' online questionnaire.

Jersey Marinas joined the scheme 12 years ago and have held the 5 Gold Anchors status since 2005.

Who are the,

Well that's sealed it for me.

I've only been there once by yacht, and the reception two years ago was, to put it briefly, not one I would wish to repeat, and in the end we left in the dark. But as with mots poor service things I put it down to an off day and was prepered to risk it again - my "two strikes" rule.

I sail mainly solo, and the thought of a long passage and then dealing with the Guernsey SPP attitude is not appealing. This thread has convinced me to not bother for a few more years. This isn't the rantings of the few - this thread is full of tales of woe, and the fact that no-one official has responded at all speaks volumes.

And as for donkey brains above, well......

This thread on BBC TV

Here's the link to last night's BBC TV Channel Island news.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01bqpqg/BBC_Channel_Islands_News_08_02_2012/

An item also appeared on BBC Radio Guernsey yesterday:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00nbllt/Jim_Cathcart_08_02_2012/

The story is also being followed by newspapers in Guernsey.

Although there's clearly a problem I don't hold out much hope things will change. One local tells me the island's authorities are in denial. Sad really as they'll lose revenue and ultimately jobs.

Er ... do you want yacht visitors or not - I assume you don't really ...

Guernsey is Guernsey, get over it.
Well - Guernsey seems to have become guernsey as the reported abilities of the harbour staff take a tumble ...

You'll still come as the lure of tax free cheap fuel is too big to ignore.
As others have said - we're sailing boats - 90L of fuel isn't a massive saving - not by the time you've considered the cost of getting and staying there - anyway - Jersey is close and Alderney was very welcoming.

Bye! Hopefully you're just one GoG - the reception we had from Guernsey didn't reflect your attitude ...

Btw - msg for the HM - if your customers are happy then your staff get an easier time and you get an easier time so we're all happy ...

We have visited Guernsey SPP for the last 10 years. We really like SPP and would not like to miss a visit.
For the tourist board, congratulations on a superb bus service!

I would go with the flow of this forum as there are certain problems I have to put up with to enjoy the rest of the Island.

If the Harbour authority would like something to work with, here are my suggestions.

The Dorys do tend to speed around the inner marina causing wash. OK, my fenders can take the bashing but if I sped around the marina in a similar way, Im sure I would be soon stopped!

8am knocks for money is inconsiderate, the guys at the marina are working but I am not.

The problems of rafting on the waiting pontoon needs to be addressed. There are videos on you tube highlighting the problems, particularly when a ferry comes into port causing a surge.

Referring to Longjohnsilvers 70foot raft, I understand it must be difficult to find a spot, but ignoring pleas, phonecalls etc from skippers should not be overlooked. I was there when this happened and it was dreadful.

Some items here I have to disagree with, like the yobs on the quay. Never once during my visits have I felt scared.

I am not not complaining, l will no doubt be visiting this year, I always find guernsey such a charming place.

These are some suggestions to make my visit to the harbour more enjoyable.

Oh yes, hello Guernseydonkey and welcome to the forum. Its good to have a voice from Guernsey.

A proposal

I started this thread because I had been on the receiving end of some disappointing service and sensed I was not alone but I had no idea the problems were so widespread. As someone has observed the thread amounts to virtual universal condemnation. That's a shame because Guernsey is an attractive destination and ought to be on the waypoint list of cruising yachts. The attitude of the authorities is sad. Not a single word of official response here. That tells us something.

The comments on this forum are not the ramblings of grumpy old yachties - the grievances are genuine and substantial. Guernsey ignores them at their peril.

I would like to suggest a five point plan to help St. Peter Port put things right.

1: Stop the dorys' excessive speed and eliminate wash

2: Scrap the 8am wake up call for fee collection

3: Ensure only suitable boats are rafted together

4: Plan in advance for rallies to eliminate unnecessary boat movements

5: Introduce a customer satisfaction questionnaire with the information pack given to visiting yachts and act upon the findings.

Unless these simple changes are made I fear lots of us will continue to give Guernsey a miss and be stopping off in Braye and St. Helier instead.

If there's broad support for this 5-point plan from forum members I'll formally propose it to the Harbour Authority.

Those point are well put but should be in place already.
does the HM ever take a look around his patch in the summer to see what is actually happening.

Well done mate! Thats the normal insular bigotted attitude that I have come to expect from your average local. To shortsighted to see whats good for them and to conceited to think they could actually be in the wrong. The actual statement about people on the benches referred to drunks being abusive not your law abiding citizen. Guernsey has a law regarding being drunk in a public place more so than the UK and all the marina staff are special constables so no action is not an option, lack of will is the problem.
Guernsey Harbour Authority needs to get its act together and pull its socks up. In this age of austerity they need to be proactive and not reactive
