G'day Annan,

Glass don't rust, don't need painting in the first 15 years or more, is cool in summer, and don't cause a lot of condensation in winter, is easy to repair without the need for presses, oxy gear and huge welding machines and a lot of electrical power.

On the other hand, steel don't mind the odd rock, or bump on another boat, don't burn real well and will bend rather than break.

Here are a couple of sites worth looking at tho:-

<font color=blue>The Sturdy is a very pretty boat but a real rock n roller in any seaway. They are also slow, cumbersome and don't handle to well. If you like your toes being sucked... then owning one will put you in the right company as a certain ex-politician owns one.

Hi Byron, Where you been? glad to see your back, and sensible answers are being posted. Old saltoz has hit the nail on the head re the pros and cons of steel or grp but there is no question when it comes to maintainence GRP rules, unless you are commercial and have pots of ££££s to pour into your vessel every year.

most of the books I've read detailing maintainance costs put the long-term costs for steel/grp at about the same, with wood a little more.

I've no direct experience, but a number of authors with (presumably) no axe to grind came up with that.

Maybe they're allowing for preventative osmosis treatment?...or a percentage of boats needing remedial work?.

Having seen the amount of time/money some grp owners spend polishing/cleaning etc compared to (say) a car....there might be something in it.

<font color=blue>Been staying away, the inane ramblings of a certain someone now gone intensely irritated me. It was easier not to come here.
