Downloading the file, how do you unpack the tgz file under XP

You need a third-party tool. I use 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/ because it can zip/unzip a wide range of archive types.

Be aware that when you unzip the .tgz file the output will be a .tar file and this is also an archive, so you need to unzip that as well (yes, two unzips) to extract the original file structure. No installation is needed just copy the extracted files to a folder of your choice (I put them in C:\program Files\zygrib) and then execute zygrib.exe (or better still create a shortcut to it on your desktop).

I have been trying PocketGrib on the ipad in the last few days and think it may be a shade better that iGrib? The 'meteogram' and data tables are useful and enables you to very easily see trends for a week or so ahead and animate them.

It really does not matter which GRIB service you use, zyGrib, UGrib or any of the various tablet Alls. All simply give the GFS. The only differences are in how you get them, how they are presented and what elements they give.

ZyGrib has more dat options than most. UGrib and iGrib have the fewest. For ease of getting them, I often use Saildoce email with its automatic repeat request but with the zyGrib viewer.

If you download zyGrib then look for something to unpack it - if its not too late, dont try jzip. It has some malware embedded that took me a while to get rid of. 7-Zip or the trial version of WinRAR are good

If you do not want the absolute latest version, version 6.1.2 can be found at http://www.ziltmagazine.com/software/ in an unzipped form – and a 125 mB download.

With Win 7, try http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Zygrib-Ftp-Grib-Software

Try http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25934908/zyGrib_win.zip for a WinZip version.

Sorry Frank, but why would anyone want an earlier version?

If anyone has problems unzipping the files, let me know and I'll upload a Windows Compressed Folder (.ZIP) version somewhere.

Simply because some people have problems with the .tgz and even the Winzip unpacking. The versionon the Zilt magazine site is always fairly new. The zyGrib people keep making small improvements to the software but these are largely cosmetic. I have at least three versions on my hard drive and they all work perfectly well. There is no need always to have the latest version.
