Greta Thunberg is crossing the Atlantic on Vagabond.

That would be the Nikki Henderson who flew to The States so that Greta was able sail back across the Atlantic in a carbon neutral way...

Isn't it great that a sailor of her talent and ability can give such a fab lift to the global campaign to highlight the worlds troubles. Well done indeed. :encouragement:

Exactly and reading her thoughts about the choice of a skipper who had to fly out and what it all really meant was the best bit of the link for me.

A challenging winter passage (or mad trans-Atlantic passage in Nov/Dec @ 40º lat with a baby onboard), no milk-run this time.

Re: Interesting background to the crossing

Agree, well done that crew .... and boat!

Background on how La Vagabonde became involved and the appointment of Nikki Henderson.

That was very interesting thanks. Particularly the fact that Jimmy Cornell was apparently a key fixer to make this happen - clearly he has a lot more ocean experience than most of us armchair critics. And interesting that he specifically was trying to source and Outremer cat for the trip - with La Vagabonde’s Outremer being the second option explored. It seems he was also key in pushing for a professional / round the world experienced skipper.
Also I hadn’t realised that RKJ had also expressed his support for the voyage - another sailer with a bit of experience.

Re: Interesting background to the crossing

Yes. Exactly. I knew something of Jimmy Cornell’s views on the environment from his seminars, so I might have put two and two together, not that I did, but this looks like the Good and the Great of long haul sailing getting involved from the outset.

Re: Interesting background to the crossing

Another thanks for the link form me. Haven't watched La Vagabonde since the first few but this will be worthwhile just to see the (presumably edited version of the) command dynamic. I'd love having a super-experienced advisor and mate on board but not sure I'd fancy being supplanted as skipper of my own boat which it sounds like cornell & co wanted to do to Riley.

Wonder if the first two candidates were rejected on the grounds of instagramability or rather lack thereof?
