Hi,

A few of you may have seen my other post about booking a UKSA course entirely green...well I've done it and I'm off in February. In total we've about 70 sailing days in the Channel between Feb and June. Whilst I've plenty of experience being wet, cold, and uncomfortable; I do value being as dry, warm, and comfortable as possible.

I'm an experienced mountaineer/diver/skier/etc, so I'm not unused to dressing for the outdoors, or short of plenty of suitable clothing for most of my sailing stuff. The only things I don't think I have anything suitable for is footwear and foulies. My plans to go to the shops to try everything on and pick what fits. I've found myself stuck on a few questions though. Searching the forum has shown me some relevant topics but I think I'm getting a little more specific here. Most old answers were "what sailing will you be doing?". I'm doing 70 days in the Channel Feb-June.

Would you prefer goretex, 3-layer, or rubberised-commercial waterproofs? I'm leaning towards 3-layer.

I had intended to buy some of the blue welly cruising boots, put in a decent insole if they were lacking, and wear either proper 5mm calf length neoprene socks or calf length insulated waterproof socks (sealskinz). Total cost to me of the blue welly boots. I've noticed UKSA recommend "neoprene/goretex boots". It's the only thing on the kitlist they've stressed buying anything of any quality at all... this has made me a bit apprehensive that I may be happier in a nicer set of boots. Especially with me liking being warm and comfy. What would you wear?

I live a long way from the sea. I have to turn up to the course with shoes at least, and there are not a lot of marine chandleries around here. I'll be passing through Southampton in a week or two and again in January with time to spare. Could you recommend a shop that keeps a good stock of shoes and boots for me to try on? Edit: shop in solent area

Cheers

Andark in Burseldon is one of the best stocked for clothing.

Definitely get layered goretex. The nature of the sailing you will do as part of a course will be that you will have periods of lots of exercise followed by lots of sitting around. Non breathable clothes will just get you wet with sweat, then cold.

As for boots, 100% agree with UKSA, a good pair of goretex or neoprene boots are worth their weight in gold. Mine would be the very last bit of "yachtie" gear I ever gave up.

I went down to marine superstore today.

Tried on all the boots and shoes I liked from cheapest to most expensive.

Turns out my feet don’t like Gill, they like dubarry and lechameau….
