The Guardian: Finland’s Coast Guard said it has detected constant disturbances to satellite navigation signals in the Baltic Sea since April and in recent weeks has seen tankers spoofing their location data to cover up visits to Russia. Last week, Finland’s interior minister Lulu Ranne said Finland believes Russia is behind disturbances detected in Finland and the Baltic Sea region in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) signals used in navigation. The coast guard said GNSS jamming, which it has detected increasingly since April in the Gulf of Finland, has led to ships getting lost at sea or losing their course.

Unless there's a US aircraft carrier fleet nearby, they create their own GPS distortion.. I suspect they also jam Glonass, Beidou, GNSS and Galileo.

You can easily see the effects of jamming and spoofing in the Black sea. Where Russian civilian aircraft spoof their position so appearing to flying toward / over Ukraine.

1000015686.pngRight now the situation of the Gulf of Finland isn't looking great (source: GPSjam)

That said, the most fun sailing in this area is in the inner fairways between the islands (and thousands of scenic anchorages). And those are very well marked, so GPS won't be quite as necessary.

But yes, maintaining a good idea of where you are is certainly recommended at all times.

GNSS is the collective name for such systems. You can't jam GNSS and GPS (or Beidou, Glonass etc.) GPS is a GNSS. The latter is not a distinct system.

As long as the visibility is good, there is no problem.
We departed one of those secluded anchorages very early one morning in good visibility, but ten minutes later it closed down to <50 m and we had 4 miles to go between the rocks until we reached open sea. We were very glad we had come the same way the day before, so we were certain of our waypoints. When we finally reached open water we breathed a sigh of relief that Poetin had not chosen that moment to play with the satellites..
