The pelican clip (?) and attached threaded part (bottle screw?) that fits into the cylinder have fallen off.
Any recommendations for a supplier for a replacement?

www.s3i.co.uk is a good supplier. You will need a pelican hook and a fork end. However, you may well find that the hooks currently available are shorter than yours and it looks like your fork is at the end of its adjustment so you may need a link to make up the length. Also you will need to check the thread of your bottle screw as judging by the Gibb hook it is fairly old and could be imperial.

Google will find you plenty of alternative suppliers, but you might do better getting your local rigger to get you the parts.

Thanks both, much appreciated.
I think I'll try a local rigging company then, probably pay a bit more but at least then I'll get something that will fit.

Anyone know whether the securing rings on these Gibb pelican hooks are retained when the hook is in the open position, or can they slip off ?

Thanks,

Boo2

They can only slip off if you disconnect the hook. In normal use they just slide along until they come to something larger than the slot in the ring such as the fork in the photo here. They do however slide off the end of the hook if it is disconnected from the wire.

Sorry I think that arrangement is C**p. I would and have use this type of pelican hoop with a screw direct into the bottle screw.

Nothing wrong with the ring type. It allows you to put more tension in the wire - useful on a biggish boat like the OPs. Been using that type for 50 years without any problems.

I've got those and really don't rate them because the wire tension loads up the pin and they are hard to do up and to undo. I've tried greasing them which helps a bit but not enough IMHO. I'm actually considering moving to the Gibbs type but don't even know whether Gibbs are still in business ?

Well I have a biggish boat 50 ft in fact.

I dont use wire I use 5mm SS chain and have a screw thread welded to one end of the chain and the other connected to the stanchion with a quick link. The tension is applied by screwing the pelican hook onto the screw rod ans locking it with a lock nut, therefore no bottle screw is needed.

I agree with boo it con sometimes be difficult to undo the spring pin but a squirt of PTFE lube soon gets it free.

Chain also hangs nicer than wire when open.
