It was with a heavy heart that 2 weeks ago I sold my trusty steed (Fairline Targa 31.....named No Illusion) and therefore have been "boatless" ever since. How boring are weekends without a boat ?????!!!!!!!!!! There is only so much gardening, DIY, shopping etc.etc. a guy can do before going totally insane. To make matters worse the weather this weekend has been perfect.........'aint no fun sitting on Lymington Town Quay "watching" !!!!.
Anyway here are a couple of questions;
How do I change my username on this forum?? The name "No Illusion" has gone with the boat.
Does anyone have "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" on a Fairline Targa 40????
The one that I am getting this Friday is of 2000 vintage.....shod with KAD 44s.
ROLL ON FRIDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Targa 40

Hi there,

We have a Targa 40, great boat thus far. Not sure what sort of boating you do, but for up here in N Wales it is pretrty bang on. I think this is proven by the fact that there are now, I think, 6 Targa 40's in Pwllheli - pretty much the most common powerboat in the marina.

We do not usually stay on board so have no need for all the extra accom offered by a flybridge and also prefer the more sheltered outdoor area that a sportscruiser offers.

The T 40 is good for several realsons - the L shaped seat next to the helm means that 4-5 peeps (including the helm) can nill around and chat while underway and in full shelter of the windscreen.

In N Wales we have few marinas, but lots of drying harbours so Outdrives can be a boon as you can be a bit more experimental than with shafts - if you make a boob and hif the bottom , you just lift the legs and you are hopefully OK. With shafts, hit the bottom and you have a big bill!

The engineroom is huge and offers loads and loads of storage for tools, spare ropes and fenders, whichever cover you are not using at the moment, and even the coachroof sun cushions.

The dinghy garage is also a boon and is much, much better than faffing around with davits. The boat also looks massively less cluttered witht the dinghy hidden away.

As for handling, itis a different beast to our last boat - a sunseeker san remo 35 - but still pretty entertaining to drive if you want to have a play about. We have KAD 300's and it will do just under 40 knots with half tanks and a clean hull, so performance is good too.

Downsides are few, but include the helm seat which is not the most comfortable thing (the bar used to adjust the seat back and forth digs into your legs when you raise the bolster to stand up. Also the wipers, despit being big and chunky are a crap design and only clear the sides of the screen, not the middle, which is a pain if you have poor visibility.

The low speed handling is also tricky - outdrives and a high freeboard do not make for easy manoeuvreing in high winds, but the bowthruster is handy as a get out of jail free card.

Other than that, its a v good boat.

Have fun

Ben

Re: Targa 40

Thanks for the info Ben. I know North Wales very well......did 20 years of my boating in and around Trearddur Bay and Red Wharf Bay,Anglesey. (I originate from Lancashire). Now live in Lymington so take my boats along the South Coast and across the Channel.
Ironic that the wipers and the helm seat are your biggest bug......they were also 2 of my biggest gripes with the Targa 31 that I have just sold. I was drawn to the space in the engine compartment on the Targa 40 (makes life much easier!!) and space won't be a problem for us either.......just me and the Mrs.!!!.
Have you had any probs with the revolving shower door ???. The one on this boat seems to have been off its runners at some time.
As with all boats there will always be something to fix.....it is all part of ownership.
Really looking forward to Friday now

Thanks again for the reply

Regards

Dave

Re: Targa 40

Ahhh...the shower door...

Yes lots of problems. This is an old Fiarline issue - I remember TCM saying he has big problems with those on his t48.

Basically, the three little wheel things are not strong enough for the big heavy door. They either bounce out at sea or break altogether.

In the end, and after lots and lots of badgering, they replaced the top runner with a new one, that is enclosed on both sides rather than one - this seems to have cured the problem. I think this is what they now fit to all the new boats as they realised (after about 8 yrs) that it was a problem.

I'd have a word with Fairline and see if they can get you one of the new style runners.

Hope you have fun on your new toy - what colour scheme does it have?
