Im getting real crap reception on the TV. Ican get a better pic on just a length of wire. Checked all terminals etc,the unit is less than a year old. Should I be able to get half a decent picture directly off the aerial i.e. before the amp? cus i,m not. Have e.mailed Glomex to no avail. Can these aerials be simply tested? Dave.

Whiuch Glomex aerial are you using? I suspect you have the cheaper one (V9125/00 ). This claims a 26db improvement and is the cheapest. There are also 27.5 db and 36 db aerial/amp systems at ascending costs.

Had exactly the same problem with one myself. With the amp turned off I couldn't get anything, with it on I could sometimes manage a fuzzy picture but not often.

Threw it away in the end (£60 down the drain) and bought a cheap one like Planty did - works much better just have the minor inconvenience of having to point it in the right direction.

Nice to hear everyone's comments about the Glomex antenna. I just bought one at the boat show, dont tell me thats another load of money wasted.
On another subject, if anyone is looking for an LCD telly, have a look on ebay, I recently bought a 13.3 inch (diag) flat screen tv off ebay both 12V and 240V for £160squids. And the picture (at home anyway is pretty good) no scart socket so no good for freeview, but certainly very good considering the cost. Now to find some space to mount it somewhere !

My Glomex amplifier has died and was just about to order a new one. If they are no good, what do you recommend?

Freeview boxes.

FWIW some freeview boxes still have an "rf modulator" for TV's not equiped with SCARTS, but you need to check first and most salespeeps won't know the difference between "passthrough" and "modulator".

Essentially the modulator retransmits the freeview signal down your cable on another (spare) channel. Being "local" you probably won't notice any loss in quality over the SCART RGB scheme.

Just in case that's of any use..

Same experience as other posters - very occaisionally get a good picture but usually really poor and the bit of bent wire on the top is better

Yep! Agree with you and the others. A total waste of money in my view, and I tried one of the better gain/more expensive ones too! Haven't decided which way to go as yet, but might visit Argos!

Cheers

TV reception depends where you are, i.e., how far from transmitter and what cliffs and hills etc. are in the way.

Also although the likes of Glomex are supposed to be omni directional, I find the boat rocking and swinging does cause reception problems.

Newtown Creek on the IOW is brilliant place for reception, a 50KW transmitter is about two miles away, you can see it. Get a rock steady picture without any ariel. Most of the Solent side of the IOW is good. Poole and Swanage on the other hand are aweful on my set up, even though Poole has it's own booster transmitter.

Have a look at the BBC web site, somewhere there are links to a list of transmitters, where they are and what power.

(Just checked the BBC site, Rowridge on IOW is 500KW, not 50, no wonder I can get a picture)

I wonder if anyone from Glomex reads these forums - not exactly a glowing report for them is it?

Its put me off, I have tried cheaper Maxview aerials with boosters but cannot get a freeview signal in Thames area for love nor money.

If the Glomex ones are crap too, just what aerial do you need to get Digital?

I cannot see how they can hope to switch over by 2007.

Re: digital

Dunno what you'd need for digital - I had been thinking about getting a freeview box for the boat but if you can't get a decent picture with it I think I'll stick to watching DVDs bugger all on the tv anyway these days.

Around Oxford a maxview works well, but the you can't get above Osney can you?? haha.

Otherwise a DAT45 (monster French thingy) or its smaller brother works anywhere up the thames (and on smaller ditches as well).

I don't think either of these would be acceptable to your good self. I have seen some completely flat - i.e. made out of ss sheet, they were originally intended for indoor use but have seen them on boats. Might be worth following up...

BTW "mobile" users are discounted from the Beebs (or whoever is responsible - if anyone), were too small a minority to bother about. Rant, Rant

Re: digital

My boat is moored in Brighton and the TV reception is appalling....Someone said install a digital box.....So I did....what a difference....it did the trick.....occasionally I get Bad Signal displayed and the picture locks but on the whole it is a very good investment

Just to add to the tally, our glomex, dont know which model, new this year factory installed by fairline, gets at best a faint fuzzy impression of a picture. Once only, in ocean village I think, it got a picture that was just worth watching. Now in France it is a waste of space. If anyone wishes to buy it for the price mentioned, £60, please apply here, first come first served :)

I had a Glomex with digibox (freeview) on my last boat, and have something else with digibox on this boat and both have given perfect pictures with masses of programs all along the South coast with the exeption of Poole.
I bought the tiny Grundig box which was the top of the range but at half price still only cost £65. It has Scart and RF out and both work equally as well. I bought it initially for its size but perhaps you do get what you pay for with digiboxes.
