With my RYA/RNLI and 4 years no claims discount Bishop Skinner premium for 65K boat is about £430. Only £320 with GJW> I can't see much difference in the policy details.
Anyone got any experience dealing with either company good or bad? or is this a no brainer?

cheers

I can only say that Bishop & Skinner handled a claim against another party who rammed my boat on her mooring and I was very satisfied with the outcome.

I've been with GJW for a number of years, I have had a couple of minor claims which they have dealt with very satisfactorily. Having said that I am paying them a lot more than what you have been quoted, closer in fact to the Bishop Skinner price. I think I feel a phone call coming on!!!!

Hi Wherry!

There was a thread about this 3 -4 weeks ago with good and bad about GJW. Might be worth your doing a search and picking up on that. I've been with BS ever since they took over the RYA insurance from Furness-Houlder.

For my own part, and knowing nothing except what I've read about GJW, I would definitely go with Bishop Skinner. They were simply excellent when I had an engine 'blow-up' in the Cape Verdes 18 months ago. A stressful and very difficult situation that was relieved by the concerned and confident decision making of BS. It was all done via a brief (hugely expensive from the CV's!) telephone call by me, and then just four or five emails. Brilliant! All sorted and the cheque arrived 5 days after I'd submitted the bill.

I'm not suggesting that other companies, including GJW, don't offer similar service, but the personal attention of Bill Southgate (one of BS's directors) who is a very 'hands-on', friendly and knowledgeable chap in a situation like mine, was worth any amount of money as far as I'm concerned.

As you can judge - 'Highly Recommended!!'

Good sailing with whomever you choose!

gjw great for claims, only restriction is on singlehanded in darkness which can be a nuisance.

Have been using Bishop Skinner for the last 10 years. Have had one large claim (circa £2500 in 1995) which was dealt with efficiently and with great speed by Bill Southgate of BS. Present boat is insured for £80,000 at a premium of £390 (includes RNLI/RYA discount) so perhaps the rate gets better with time or depends on type of boat!

Re: GJW or Bishop Skinner?Update

For a modest increase in the policy excess GJW agreed to cover my Sadler 290 for singlehanded nightime sailing at the same premium cost, so I went for GJW!

I've been with GJW or years, but so far have never had to make a claim so can't comment on that side of things. Always quoted me happy, but one year considered shopping around and found that everyone wanted a current survey before they would cover......put me off so stayed with them.
