Giving Way to Ferries, advice please

I passed about 20 Clyde Ferries in the last week at various points. On several occasions they clearly gave way to me when it was obvious that it would help my tack. I think they do a great job. The Arran ferry was the best!

Whilst out with a local guy, travelling back from Bembridge to Langstone in a 26' cat, a friend of mine was crew, the owner decided he was the stand on vessel and came close to being run down by a container vessel, leaving Southampton via the Nab Channel. A very frightening experience, but there are a few idiots out there.

I suggest Ian buy himself a Pirie Reece map of the world, a Hadley Quadrant and a load stone! And suggest he leaves Chi Harbour, never to return.

Carribean Blue,

Thought that you might like to correct the spelling of your name to

Caribbean Blue,

unless of course it is deliberate.

Would you think the Clyde would be a good place for Ian to go and prcatice as there would be less private traffic? He could then concentrate on missing the ferries

Snot a wind up. Ian has problems with public transport. Even his bicycle was reversed over by a Vectis bus. Remnants in background.

run over

I'm even more worried now, i didn't realise there is so much to sailing in the solent, thank you all for your advice though.

I've bought a reeds almanac, I got it on ebay, its the 2008 one so i'm hoping its ok for this weekend. There is an awful lot in it so lots of reading to do before I leave for Cowes.

I was chatting to someone in the pub who said all the tides were wrong for Sunday because we want a few beers before we come back and won't leave there until about two, i'm a bit confused about what he meant

That should be fine , its as good as any.. don't forget your radio check, though.

"Solent CG,Solent CG,Solent CG"
"this is SmoothTalkingBustard,SmoothTalkingBustard,SmoothTalkingBustard"
"has anyone told you you've got a lovely voice?"
"over"

Ian, you could always try having a word with QHM Portsmouth & Southampton VTS and ask them if they would be ever so kind and halt all ferries, warships, container ships, oil tankers and cargo ships whilst you are on passage to ensure that you have a stress-free trip. They are very understanding to the requirements of yachties!:D

Ah - yes, tides are all wrong ... because the other way to miss the ferries is to go below ...

and if there isn't enough tide then there isn't room below ... but basically you could open the seacocks and withdraw the log. But don't forget to attach the hose & fender to the engine intake ...

QHM & VTS

Thank you for that.

Do you think I should phone them or call them on the radio, the big dial on the front turns and the numbers change. If it all goes wrong I turn it off, then when I turn it back on it goes straight to channel 16.

I am going to call the coastguard and tell hem about my trip, i think if i do this from the marina then there should be time for it to be sorted out.

Probably not a good idea. Would give 'em more time to string a boom across Chi harbour entrance and post armed units on each shore to prevent you leaving. Best to let them know after you have left the harbour and at sea as you will have more room to evade detection.:D

If you do get passed undetected you might give Warbarrow Bay, further West of the Solent a wide berth, as the Army have many armed units there and many a poor sole has come to grief trying to anchor up for a night in the East corner beneath the cliffs.

OH ... and play "I will survive!" full chat on the boat hi fi with CH16 kept open, so that the ferry skipper will hear it!

Ian,

It's positively encouraged, the Coastguard want people to stay safe and feel comfortable, if playing music over the VHF on CH16 helps, they won't have a problem with it. Try it, or try playing the Titanic theme music for something different.

Cheers, Brian.
