Gibralarr for supplies/refit

IME Gib makes Spain look positively frenetic.

You will get stuff, eventually, a bit cheaper but don't be in a hurry.

Wotsisface - VO5 seems to be a big swinging dick there, you could ask him.

Also, capnsensible (an oxymoron) is a smaller swinging dick but will also help.

Don't think there is anybody else I can insult at the moment

Now we all know what 'soldiers wind' actually means......

Don't worry Brian, I'm in Rota at the moment, will post a dit at the weekend. :encouragement:

I've always found Gib very expensive, particularly Sheppards. However, you can have stuff delivered there VAT free from UK if correctly marked for vessel in transit.

I found Sheppards massively irritating. They do not have prices on anything and you have to grab the item, queue up for about ten hours, present it to the bored and uninterested sales staff to be scanned - only to discover it is twice the price of the UK equivalent.

As for stuff delivered tax free - by 'there' you mean Gib and not Sheppards? I had a Windpilot air freighted from Hamburg to Gib Airport but had to go through a fairly protracted import procedure with customs to get it in. Worth it though as it was completely VAT free.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear, I was told the goods have to be addressed to the vessel which has to be in Gib at the time of collection. I did get a good deal on a new life raft from Marine Safety in Gib. but that's about the only boaty item I've found cheaper there.

As an alternative, try Hire-U-Shop (ask for the owner: Mark) odd name for a chandlery but is well stocked and can order in quickly. Very knowlegeable particularly on electrics, a lot cheaper than Sheppards and more hands-on. He owns the jeanneau 52 (?) in Marina Bay at the town end of the dock. Fantastic service when I needed him and knows who to talk to in Gib and the nearby Varadero Elias Blanco (Alcadeisa marina dry dock). On these last, I had my rudder bearings replaced, full engine service, lift out cradle hires etc for a week at less than £1000 (for a 15m SY). Excellent standard of work too.

Mark's contacts at Hire-U-Shop are as follows:Tel: (350) 20073017: Mobile: (350) 57288000
Email: mark@hire-u-shop.com

Hope that helps

Thx for all the advice. I plan to have a watermaker sent to Gib as "Yacht in transit" and understand it should be VAT free. But may well need to replace some running rigging and last minute replacements for any faulty equipment.

Brian

Hi
Is Gib a good place to get spares, rigging check, replacement running rigging etc before setting off on a transat?

Brian

Call up Flash Gordon from Performance Rigging, they can fly out to meet you where you are and then get replacement parts sent out to you without VAT added and do the install there. Worth every pound.

I found Sheppards massively irritating.

They speak highly of you, though.

Anyway.

Gib and nearby La Linea are great places to refit.

I do that a lot. Actually lots and lots!

People sometimes grizzle about prices but on site wins it for me. You can leg around for days trying for cheaper if you wish, but busses, hire cars, taxis all add up!

For rope (running rigging), fenders, fishing stuff, yeah, goto La Linea. Linemar near the Cemetary has great prices, Rosie speaks good English. Long walk tho.

For boatyard, as mentioned, the Varadero in La Linea is excellent. Pepe the travelhoist operator is v. good. A carton of Marlboro helps! You are totally free to use any outside help. Ther is a Sef Efrikan chap who has his own workshop nearby. This year on our boats we have changed 13 hull valves and a cutlass bearing, he is good. (bought vvs in Sheppards)

In Gib, you can get just about anything done. Again, people grizzle about service. Its not England, as cruisers you get over it. In season there is great demand on very few people. You will be in a queue. Chill.

Fly in a rigger???? Bonkers. Shaun at Sheppards is as good as it gets. Rigged 3 yachts here. Keep the bill down by being his assistant. You will learn massive about your rig. He is also a magician with metal. Can fabricate anything from anything.

Getting stuff shipped in is easy but costs a bit of time. So what!!!!

This past year have got a water heater, gearbox, saloon windows and loadsa other stuff sent from places (various).

There are people in Marina Bay that can cheaply help with routine servicing and Sheppards for technical help.

Up to you, of course, but if you cant find what you need, do drop me a PM and can put you in right direction!

Anyone calling in Gib, happy to help! :encouragement:

Well capn, you must get special treatment.

The half dozen guys in front and behind me, each holding a piece of marine chandlery, found it 'massively irritating' as well.

Hmmm, I wonder why they can't just simply label things with the price?

Imagine Tesco trying to get away with that.

Well, I go watch Man Utd footie and drink lager with the manager. But I still queue in line with everyone else.

I think that patience and politeness has been forgotten in todays ' I Want It Now' society. lots of places around the globe simply don't care about Me Me Me.

What is a 'Tesco'??

Buying loose diamonds there is great value on high street prices in the UK.

Barter tho! One company gave me a price in GBP and when I said I was quoted that in dollars from Another they said 'oh yes price in dollars cough cough' (busted).

Well got 2 out of three things, count that as a result.

You can look up prices by simply entering the product code into the thoughtfully provided computer screen and keyboard near the entrance.

:)
