I took great delight in removing the foredeck gas box last weekend... the last stage in the process of removing gas from the boat altogether. The main prompt was the impossibility of building a self draining gas locker. The gas bottles stood on the foredeck inside a box I made for the purpose with plenty of vents to allow any escaping butane to go out through the scuppers.
I took the Parker two-burner grill and oven off the boat and replaced it with an American oven, three burner plus oven, using spirits. Bilbobaggins... if you are reading this it works fine!
Like others I use un-denatured methylated spirits which is clear and virtually odourless, bought from a furniture restoration supplies shop in 2.5 litre tins.
My stove has a pressure tank and does need burner pre-heating, but its not a hassle once you get used to it. It is slightly slower than gas in boiling a kettle, but hey... I'm not going anywhere in a hurry.
I have yet to try the oven out as I prefer to barbecue using a Cobb in the cockpit
Cabin heating is either a charcoal stove or a rarely used Eberspacher.
So I have achieved the ambition of being gas free and its liberating not worrying if the bottle tap has been turned off.
I guess the real test will come when the memsahib decides to make herself a cuppa.
The trick with the Taylors for priming is a catalyst bottle, basically a bottle which you can squeeze and measure out amounts of meths. Once you figure how much you need you get it primed right every time.
I always wait for the flames to die out, and have one of the long nosed lighters so I can easily reach to burners to light them.
Servicing is easy, and if you PM me I have contact with a chap who does better prices than the £1600 030s are currently quoted at!
