I have been considering paining my hull (above waterline) this winter but am unsure if I can afford the time.

Can anyone advise me of anyone in the Portsmouth area who I may be able to contract to do the job.

What time of year would you advise is the best, both from a cost and finish point of view.

It would have to be done in our boatyard it I have it done before next April.

Any advise appreciated.

Cheers

T Smy at Hamble Point marina do an excellent job in their own shed, where it is done under controlled conditions in their boatshed. I do not think you will get a really good job done in the open.

Wayne, I did this job on my Centaur about 3-4 years ago using Int. 2-pot polyurethane, after thorough filling and sanding with random orbital sander and nothing coarser that 240 grit. Although I achieved a reasonable finish outside in early summer with a brush, this particular 2-pot cures so rapidly that you cannot easily lay off brush marks. Other 2-pots are more amenable in this regard. A professional recommended either Blakes or Veneziani (my boat yard Pepe on Hayling Is. is the local supplier for Veneziani), and from a job they did outside on another boat, it looks very good. After a lot of scratches and chips were knocked out of my paintwork, I got a professional to help and guide me with a re-paint about a month ago. This time (with same 2-pot) using small 4" roller and immediate laying-off, we achieved a good finish; although not glass-like it can be polished to this level if required. The professional lives and works on Is. of Wight and is prepared to travel. I do not have his name or phone number with me, but if you are interested, when I return to UK from Portugal at the end of this week, I will post it to you on the forum.

You can get brushing thinners for these 2 packs, which allows you more time to get a good finish with the brush, thats what I use.
