Getting insurance with limited experience

I've tried Pantaenius too.

Thanks for all the other suggestions.

If not sorted ... honest - try Manheimer as I suggested.

Just straight application - no need to detail experience or anything .. you have a certificate - that and sailing area is all they need.

I doubt very much they have changed much since I used them.

Or go Basic Boat ...

The Yachting 24 policy offered by Pantaenius is an insurance policy underwritten in Germany and possibly other European insurers and outside of any assistance offered by the Financial Conduct Authority or Financial Ombudsman Service.
Down to how comfortable you feel .
Remember Edward William and or Northern Reef debacles reported on the forums and subsequently struck off on the FCA register.

As regards having policy underwritten in Germany - there is no problem with that at all ..... remember today UK is still part of EU and rules are applied EU based. After Brexit - I do not believe there will be much change at all to such as this for Insurance etc.

Ross,

Just a thought, is the issue more about where the boat will be based than about your experience? Is this more challenging than say a typical Solent marina?

In which case demanding some experienced help to begin with seems reasonable.

...

Seems unlikely to me - the Solent is much like the M25 but with 20 ton yachts in place of cars! The scope for collisions seems almost boundless!

I thought he was thinking of the Mersey.

I don't know it at all, but even in one of his posts he wondered if it was a good place for a beginner.

Hi all,

Pantaenius got back to me and agreed, but I noted this:

The following additional conditions also apply:-

Skipper Warranty Clause

Warranted that a suitably qualified/experienced skipper is to be on board at all times when the vessel is underway. Skipper's CV to be approved by Underwriters.

So, whether they are satisfied with the qualifications I have is not clear - obviously I was honest in stating what had. Also, for Sadler 26 with combined value of hull and personal effects for 13,500, they are asking for 550 a year*. Pricey?

Y-Yacht Insurance got back to me with 220 ish for UK waters on 23,000 value. There isn't any restrictions accept I cannot sailer longer than 18 hours in one go without a 8 hour break.

*Cover was for European/Med waters too, so larger coverage might be the reason for this?

They quoted me 450 on 50k total value for EU coastal + inland so yeah that's painful. Our non experience levels are pretty similar though I could add 8 years no claims on an inland boat and some time in the Ionian boating lake.

Northern Europe

Inland European Union

Mediterranean Sea

-- Hmm, not sure why but I put Northern Europe and Inland too. But still, seems expensive relative to amount insured.

Most people are not aware that Home Contents covers most personal effects (incl Computers, Cameras, etc) stolen from cars .. boats ... caravans ... tents ... etc.

I found out to my advantage when all my rods and gear were stolen out of my boat in Langstone Hbr. Along with sails ... boating gear.

House Contents asked me if I wanted cash value or nominate tackle shop which would then invoice them direct. They told me how much (turned out to be 100% of claim) .... I nominated tackle shop ... they sent letter to the shop. I picked my gear and all done.

In fact all settled while boat insurers were fluffing about trying to decide whether to accept claim.

Have you tried Craftinsure? I was with them for a while (mobo) and not a qualification to my name or any experience to start with. Never had to claim but know a couple of people who did and said they were extremely good: Craftinsure Boat Insurance | Compare Yacht, Narrowboat, Dinghy, RIB, Speedboat, Canoe and Kayak Insurance

Incidentally I'm with Y-Yacht now. I recently obtained my commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore and excitedly assumed a drop in premium... But, nope, no difference at all!

I'm with Y and that sounds much like what they restrict me to. My premium is about 50% more but for nearly three times the replacement value of your boat. If they're happy to get rid of the nonsense about having a 'suitably qualified/experienced' skipper on board, then go with them.

Re the 18hrs max stuff, this is surely only for single-handing. Also let's say I find myself through circumstances at sea having to sail for longer than 18hrs (never yet happened) then I'll simply accept I'm not covered for that period - but that my insurance won't be voided for afterwards!

Pantaenius gave me a no-strings online quote for a hull value of 45 + 10k personal effects on their EU coastal (< 20nm off) for just under 600. That's with a day skipper and about a month's charter / flotilla in Greece + being desperate enough to add 8 year's no claims inland boating with a bit of tidal.
So UK not included from next weekend?

Not sure I trust any insurers as far as I can throw them... used to be with Pantaenius, and then shopped around. Went with a Lloyds backed insurer through Compare Yacht Insurance .com and wouldn't look back! Will be interesting to know what happens to my renewal after brexit, and will be sure to have a look around again.
