gestures!!!

Putting my tongue firmly in my cheek - if you are close enough to see that the gesture is rude then you are too close /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

More seriously - you admit that you came back "somewhat faster" than 10 knots - which means you were almost certainly exceeding the speed limit. It is not unreasonable for people to object to that. I can only assume from your posting that you don't feel the speed limit ought to apply to you?

However making rude gestures is counter productive and would not be condoned on my boat

10 Knot speed limit in the Solent?????

<hr width=100% size=1>"I am a bear of very little brain and long words bother me" - A A Milne.

10knts speed limit in the Solent? The gesture was one of many made, I saw the particular gesture when the powerboat was going at approx 6 knts on tickover. When in my own boat a Moody 38 I ignore the irresponsible, but was shocked at the number of gestures made by my own fraternity.

Yes.

There is a 10 knot speed limit within 1000yds (I think) of the shore in the Eastern Solent (i.e. the Dockyard port of Portsmouth).

However most MoBo ers seem to think it does not apply to them /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Actually, its not speed that is the problem its wash .. and from what I observe maximum wash is generated at displacement speed rather than on the plane .. or accelerating to get on the plane or deccelerating off it ... and many power boat drivers do'nt actually know how to get up properly on the plane. So I rather have someone bimbling along at 4knts or planing at 20+ knots .. what I don't like are those at max displacement speed .. or nutters that accelerate onto the plane at 15 yds distance from me .. all in all I'm a live and let live person .. apart from television and wummin .. hate 'em both except for .... erm is that the time nursie ...

What rule would that be?

The rules for small boats say that Ballast buoy should be left "close to port" on both entering and leaving. (LNTM 06/04)

I'm glad to see that you've noticed that most yachties are abiding by the rules

"(i.e. the Dockyard port of Portsmouth)." Yes, and sailing boats with engines MUST use them...... Yeah right!!!

Sorry - which rule is that then?

The only one I know is the one that says you must use the engine between No4 Buoy and Ballast buoy and the vast majority of sailing boats do that.

It's rather frightening that a number of MoBos are seeking to justify the fact that most MoBos break the speed limit by claiming that most sailing boats break imaginary rules.

I agree some do but as we (you) seem to like generalising ("However most MoBo ers seem to think it does not apply to them ") I guess that means most don't.

It's a good job I didn't fire up the trusty Yanmar 1GM when I hit 8 knots SOG (with fastish tide, I hasten to add) past the forts a couple of weeks ago.

In my experience it is the exception rather than the rule to see a MoBo sticking to the 10kt speed limit once they have left the harbour. So on the passage between the inner swashway and Gilkicker it is common to see MoBos doing 20+ kts in spite of the fact that a 10kt limit applies.

Is your experience different?

<hr width=100% size=1>

If there's no such rule then I stand corrected. However, when undertaking my sailing course in that area, it was drummed into us by the instructor that there was such a regulation - must admit I never questioned it, but have noticed most do leave it to port.

<hr width=100% size=1>

I can't find where it says there is a 10knot speed limit between the harbour entrance and No 4 Bar Buoy? If there is then I am probably guilty of speeding here./forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Within 1,000 yards of the shore in any part of the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth - 10knts

Re: Speeding!

Hey - if I were able to break the speed limit I'd be boasting about it /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

But in case you're worried it applies to speed through water not speed over ground.

"Within 1,000 yards of the shore in any part of the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth"

What constitutes the "Dockyard" port?
