Re: 10knt speed limit

Now - what would be realy cool is if you could superimpose a rough line 1000mtrs form the shore/forums/images/icons/cool.gif. A planing motorboat exclusion zone!!

Re: Speeding!

You are right. I have checked Bylaw 5 again - "The master of any power-driven vessel ----------- shall not -------- 8 knots through, on or over the water".

The LNTM only draws attention to the Bylaw "Attention is drawn to the speed limit of 8 knots which is in force for the whole of Chichester Harbour. Attention is drawn to Chichester Harbour Bylaw No.4....."

Re: 10knt speed limit

The QHM webite qhmportsmouth.com 'who are we' section shows various maps etc of the whole area. Also details of small boat channel etc. You can register with them and they will send update of Notices etc to you by email --good stuff. QHM seems to be trying to keep us yachties -power and sail - informed. I think most yachties just want to go out to enjoy themselves and will obey sensible rules when they know what they are and why they are. There are always the horrible few but at least if most of us know the rules the more obvious they become.

advisory!!

Taken from the QHM web site.

04/07/2004

I have had several questions from local leisure mariners asking how to pass Ballast Buoy when entering and leaving harbour.

The current LNTM (06/04) says “Where possible vessels [under 20m] entering the harbour should generally pass close to the east of Ballast Buoy and those exiting close to the west.” The idea is that this will align vessels for the correct side of the Small Boat Channel (SBC). Note though this is only advisory at present as there is limited room to the west of Ballast and it can get rather crowded on a busy day.

I am however considering a number of a changes to the Small Boat Channel for next year which might include moving Ballast Buoy slightly further East and then making it mandatory for vessels under 20m to leave it to port. I emphasise that this change is only under consideration and full consultation will take place through the Dockyard Port Forum in the normal way before any decision is made.

In summary then in a vessel of less than 20m in length is recommended, if safe to do so, to leave Ballast Buoy to port when entering and leaving Portsmouth Harbour.

I hope this helps and wish you all a safe and happy summer of sailing.
