I've just seen advertised the nasa weatherman radiotelex reciever. Does anyone have any experience of the rtty system? Is it any good? is it better or more reliable than navtex? Any information about the system would be appreciated

If you do a search on this forum you'll find quite a thread on the Weatherman not too many days ago. You can find details and a description on my web site, url below.

The only coverage gap from the Black Sea to the Canaries to the North of Norway appears to be the Irish Sea! So if you sail out West it's not perhaps for you.

I used it three or four years ago via a HF radio and laptop. I have just set the system up again but have lost my timings. Does anyone know the approximate time of the broadcast for the two English channel reference points? I found the system very accurate!

I think the transmissions that you want are

at 08.20 and 20.20 on 147.3, 11039 and 14467.3 KHz
and
09.55 and 21.55 on 4583, 7646 and 10100.8 KHz

These are the Ireland to Canaries 48 hr forecasts and include 2 English Channel points and Lyme Bay.

I go along with you about their accuracy.

There are links to all the RTTY and weatherfax transmissions at Frank Singleton's site along with a very comprehensive treatment of just about everything the yachtsman needs to know about the weather.
