How big a generator will I need ? The boat has a fridge freezer, hob, fan oven, microwave and TV. All the appliances are full size 230v. Won't be using them all at the same time of course.

Could there be any chance of additional AC appliances being added in the future eg. air (relocating to Med.?) big battery charger/s, bigger freezer?

A kettle is the killer at 3kw. Then if you put your water heater on that'll take you to 4.5kw. Then the hob, that’s 7.5kw and over 30 amps!! UK shorepower is usually only 16amps so its all about using things in isolation anyway. My genie is 11kw but its a waste and I would settle for a smaller and quieter 4kw and just accept that big items like the kettle and hob should be used separately. The TV, fridge etc will all use comparatively little and could be used together.

I agree with Mike. 4 kW sounds about right.

I agree on the 4 kVa recommendation providing you dont use the kettle, hob and water heater at the same time. Aircon would probably push up the requirement to 7kVa or more

If you can spring for the extra moolah, get a 1500 rpm unit. Weighs more but in a MOBO = maters little.

My boat has 2 shore power leads that operate 2 parallel systems on board with the heavy stuff split equally.The genny splits as well.It can use 1 lead , and it will automatically switch to power both ,but it trips at 16amps ashore.It never trips when both plugged in to 16 amp shorepower,even when fridge freezer, water heater ,ice maker ,kettle coffee machine, cooker etc,etc are all being used intermitantly.Never been warm enough here to run the ac as well though.

Yes definitely agree with that. Although on paper the noise output of 3000rpm gennies (usually single cylinder engines) may appear similar to 1500rpm ones (usually 2 or more cylinders), the quality of the noise from a 1500rpm unit is much less intrusive simply because of the lower revving engine. As you say though, there is a penalty in terms of cost, weight and size

For the extra weight you are far better off investing in a 1500rpm set, most are indirectly cooled and that means long lfe with little or no corrosion problems.
I have lost count how many engine cylinder barrels I have binned from farryman based gensets over the years.
There maybe a kohler unit on ebay thats 1500rpm and 4kw, though id have the biggest I could get inat the right price, there wa a westebeke set in southampton for sale too.
