Well a lot has happened sinced I first posted an enquiry about the old cutter that my Father now owns, I have discovered it was built at Bursledon, Southhampton in 1935 and was originally called "Gearra". If anyone out there knows of the vessel and its original builder or past owners it would be apreciated. it is now in Victor Harbor, Australia and is under going a refit after being out of the water for 3 months getting the hull reribbed and painted, ready to go another 67 years.
Can anybody tell me what the name means, I think it is of Celtic or Gaelic origon.

It seems that this vessel was originally named 'Olive II'. Designed by W. Lindahl Brown and built by F.J. Deacon at Burseldon in 1935. In 1949 it was owned by T.B. Sillars of 2, Ryder Street, St James's, London SW1, a member of Royal Burnham Yacht Club and L.S. (Little Ship?). At this time it was registered at Lloyds with Official Number 181899.

Hope that this is of help.

Just read your original post and it seems that at some time the name has been reverted to the original.

Thanks Forbsie for your information, it is good to be able to build a history on this old vessel, the fact that it was originally built as the Olive 2 makes the whole story even more interesting. all I need now is an original photo of her about the time she was built. If anyone out there can supply me with any more links about where she was built or the Yacht clubs etc please let me know.
