My Hurth 50 gear-box is losing oil, probably through the input-shaft oil-seal. I intend to remove the box from the engine fly-wheel housing; is replacement of this seal then a fairly straightforward job, or does it require substantial dismantling of the gear-box itself. I don't have any workshop info. for guidance, any informed advice would be appreciated.
This problem has caused me to look for a breather on the gear-box. I was told that the tubular oil dip-stick performed this function. Mine has a small cross-hole drilled just below the filler plug, but there is no communication with the outside of the box when the plug is tightened. Any info. again welcome.

Workshop info...

You could probably download workshop info from here. It might not be in English, but it could be a starting point.

check the easy things first "prob leak thro the input shaft"??? if so the fluid would drip into the bellhousing and normaly there is a small hole at the bottom with a giggle pin...the fluid would be evedent there..as said in another thread check the gear change shaft seal this is common as the shaft lays on the bottom of the seal and never fully rotates so uneven wear causes a leak only when gearbox is running...dipstik may have a small breather hole in one of the flats and may be blocked

I had a similar problem with my volvo MD2 gearbox. I drilled a hole in the dipstick/filler plug. and ran a plastic pipe up a couple of feet into a container which had a small hole in the top. Actually a spice jar. when the gearbox gets warm it foams up into the tube then into the container and when it cools it runs back in. It may be that the oil is foaming and causing you to loose oil. Like your box the Volvo does not seem to have a breather. It may be a foaming problem and if the air can not escape it could be driving the oil out somewhere else.
Hope this helps a bit

Provided that the seal is pressed into position from the outside you should be able to replace it without dismantling the box. You can drill a couple of small holes in the body of the seal and screw in a couple of self tapping screws and use these to pull it out. A gentle tap inwards first may well loosen it a bit and make it easier to pull out.
When fitting the new one tap it in gently using a block of wood and keep it square.
Bearing stockists usually keep seals as well and should be able to match it for you.
