Gas bottles in lockers

I have a properly vented gas locker which holds 2 cylinders. I want to store the "not in use" cylinder in a cockpit locker and use the space in the vented locker to store petrol. What is the opinion of storing an unconected spare gas cylinder in a normal cockpit locker. There is also a sniffer in the bilges, which is very sensitive.

Can you guarantee that the valve on the "Not in use" bottle will not weep ever so slightly? I don't think you can, IMHO.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it. I presume the petrol is for the outboard. How much do you REALLY need?? Is there no way to get a smaller petrol container in with the gas bottles? If there is no other way, then I would consider just keeping the petrol lashed down somewhere on deck.

If you put a cap on the "not in use" bottle and test for leaks ("fairy liquid" test) then it will be as safe as the parts of your gas system (piping, cooker etc.) that are not in a "gas-tight" locker. Many older boats simply store the gas cylinders in a cockpit locker with an o/b drain anyway.
You imply that your vented locker is actually below decks, so why not store the (smelly) petrol cans in the cockpit locker where you're going to put the gas bottle? I keep all diesel, paraffin etc. in 1-gallon cans in the lazarette, as far from the accomodation as possible!

PETROL IN ANCHOR LOCKER ONLY.
there was an Oyster some 2 yrs ago kept the seperate fuel tank fron thr Rib o/b in a cockpit locker, it pressurized its self due to ambient temp & released fuel vapour,
someone then started the main engine. BOOM + FIRE.
OYSTER SENT A MEMO / ADVICE TO ALL OWNERS . PETROL = ANCHOR LOCKER TO DRAIN OVER- BOARD

I would have to agree. Store the gas in the correct locker and store any spare fuel in the anchor locker. I would also add that if the O/B has its own self contained fuel tank then fill it up and only take the spare fuel when you intend an extended passage, if your not going on a long passage then don't bother with the spare fuel tank. That way you only carry the spare fuel when neccesary, also think about putting some protection around the tank so that it doesn't chaffe on the anchor chain if the weather gets a bit rough, you don't want it rolling around the anchor locker everytime you tack the boat or ride out over a big wave. Wrapping it in a towel or sitting it on a piece of foam would do the trick, also think about stowing it with a few coils of chain just sitting on top of the tank to stop it rolling about.
