Does anyone have actual experience of the costs of using these. I would really like to know the costs of receiving messages, including the cost to the sender of that message.
AIUI with unlimited messages I could receive messages from friends but I have not been able to find out the costs to friends (or Wifee) of sending those messages.

I have a Garmin InReach mini which I use to track and report offshore passages. Great peice of kit in my opinion.

the Garmin “Inreach devices do not have phone numbers assigned to them, so they can only send SMS (text), email, or inReach messages. ... Initiate a conversation with a recipient by sending them a message so they can reply to it. Give access to your MapShare page so others can message youfrom there” …. If you provide your msgs to an email address/or provide access to Mapshare page there no cost to the person replyibg/sending as it’s NOT sent as an SMS message.

hope that helps

Thanks for that. I am obviously a little dense when it comes reading their FAQs etc. ?

Free (or just the cost of a SMS) to send to an inreach. It does use one of your messages, which doesn't matter if your on unlimited.
When you look at the different contract options, add up how many messages you actually send/receive and the cost.
We are on the emergency plan but would have to send something like 30 messages each month to make it worth upgrading.
(Apologies if I've got that number wrong)
Of course if you are receiving lots of messages, educating friends not to write essays can be harder.

Thanks for that. When you say "or for the cost of an sms" are you suggesting that an ordinary phone can send an sms (presumably via some service)to an Inreach?

If you first send a message from an inreach to someone's mobile phone number then they receive it as a text message. If they reply to the text then it will go back to the inreach.
However there is no way for you to give someone your inreach number (it doesn't exist) a message must first be sent from the inreach.

if this text message is sent to some number with a geographic location, where is it? Or is there one for each country...so that it is effectively a local text?.

Messages sent from ours has a UK number to reply to.
UK registered inreach to a UK Mobile phone number.
So a local number.
South African friends inreach messages sent to us also has a UK number to reply to. (Not sure where his inreach is registered).

I can't be sure what happens if we messaged a non UK mobile or the inreach was registered elsewhere.
