Has anyone connected a NASA AIS engine to a Garmin GPS550?? The Garmin site doesn't list the 550 as AIS compatible, but others say it is.

I have seen several claims that it is possible, although Garmin's site does not have this model on its list of AIS-compatible receivers. The spec just says it can 'display AIS tracks'.

What I am hoping for is someone who has actually done it to tell me how to achieve this. I know it is a question of connecting the blue NMEA wire and possibly one other, but how?

There are several references to AIS targets and alarms in the Owners Manual here.

Regarding installation, I suggest you use the brown (NMEA In - Port 1) and Black (NMEA Ground) wires. The interface should be set to NMEA High (AIS works at 38400bps).

Looks pretty straightforward and should work with any AIS unit communicating via NMEA 0183.

Thanks,

I spoke to AllGadgets today and they said pretty much the same thing. Have ordered the AIS engine and a VHF aerial for the pushpit and will report back in due course.

Wb, we installed the Garmin 555s with Easy AIS about 18 months ago. It was just a case of connecting the right two wires together worked out from the two manuals, although I got the wires the worng way round the first time. I think the Nasa AIS will be very similar. Garmin showed targets as soon as we switched it on once connected to the AIS.
