galvanized

Hi ,
My ballast and lifting keel are made of galvanized steel.
This is showing signs of pitting and rust spots .
What is the best way to treat this ?

Cheers John

If you wanted to completely renovate it you could get it sandblasted and regalvanised which is what I had done to an anchor of mine. The galvanisers also did the sandblasting and releading . I imagine the logistics of dealing with an item the size of a ballast keel are somewhat more difficult. Perhaps one of the Zinc rich paints would be the way to go after a good wire brushing, and follow with the paint system of your choice.(undercoat & antifoul.)Good Luck.

If you can't remove them to get them sandblasted, try to use an angle grinder to remove rust and spots. It is critical to get down to clean bare steel, otherwise it will rust through again. I have had some reasonable results with Galvafroid.

Good Luck
