I have a Furuno NX300 display head which I’d like to install but a genuine Furuno antenna costs ( part number NX-3H-D) in the region of £250. Does anyone know whether I could use a cheaper option of antenna to get the thing to work? For example the NASA antenna?

I'm afraid that you can't. I tried this a few months ago. The Furuno antenna has active circuitry inside.
